    Posted: 05 Mar 2025 at 7:31pm
7 years ago, the AGCO dealer closest to me got their AGCO contract cancelled. Now this month the only other privately owned AGCO dealer in NE Wisconsin is closing their doors.

I am considering applying to be an AGCO dealer in the near future. I would like to hear thoughts and ideas from guys who have owned or worked at AGCO dealers. Am I going mad?

"I would like to hear thoughts and ideas from guys who have owned or worked at AGCO dealers"
Guess I am not qualified to answer your questions.
All I know about the big businesses these days is you gotta watch your back just in case they screw you from behind.... stiff you or do some other abomination and you lose everything...
Something like make you build a huge new building and then purchase X amount of inventory and then place you on quota system and not meet it, then drop you.
Go talk to those other businesses that are no longer in business and get the skinnys on what made them close their doors or relinquish their franchises.

Go talk to the ones that are still in business and see if you can be part of them, or be like a satellite arm for them...  Or maybe somehow buy in with them? ... or take over their AGCO dealership.

What I do know from over the years, is when anyone of these places change management, product lines, locations etc., Seems instantly the prices jump for the parts and repairs.   and the small guy that needs parts and repairs withers away...
Good Luck, Hope you can swing your dream.

Could be beneficial and could be a bank breaker. Local Deere dealer family was getting pressed on increasing the ‘Floor Plan’ investment to have more equipment on the lot for sale they may not have been able to move so readily. Cost was to bump a Million and not affordable. The family sold to consolidate with another dealer, not been the same since.

I admire your thought, but no manufacturer wants a single dealership out there anymore. They want someone who has several if not many location's under their name.
I think if you could look at an individual dealer’s books you would find that the return on investment would scare you away. In our state of Georgia, I believe we only have 3 AGCO dealers in the whole state. Deere has about 50, all owned by 2 groups

Well I admit I have 0 firsthand experience, but from my observation of how the major company dealerships are evolving, I can’t imagine they would even entertain your proposal.

My thought would be start a private used equipment business, repair included. Market yourself as “Specializing in Agco and Agco Legacy products”. Maybe tack on All Brands Welcome “ if it suits your fancy.

A good buddy of mine bought out the former MM/Oliver/White dealer that we both had worked at here in Walnut, and it had been a parts only contract. When He bought the business, Agco said then that he was the last parts only, single location dealer they would sign, and that was in 2000, or 2001. As mentioned above, the company has gotten so big and to keep up with the other colors of equipment, have force mega dealers on the customers. He let the AGCO contract go a couple of years ago now, due to them putting such high cost requirements on his small business. $30,000/yr computer program for ordering parts is the one that stuck with me. Agco, is not interested in anyone who is keeping this old heritage equipment going, they want dealers to sell new equipment, which makes sense.

AGCO has 2 tiers of dealers. CUE - under 120 HP and some other lines that go with it, and the Full Line dealers.  First of all, do you have a net worth of 2 million and 1/4th of that liquid ? Second get a 'Cost of Doing  Business Survey' for Farm dealerships. Look at the bottom line. You can make more putting your money in CD's. You will have to have an approved facility - they are concerned about image. You will have to have techs who can test out or spend a lot of time in training as will you and your parts person. You will have to have a computer/book keeping system that will be expensive as well as access to an IT person or company. $10,000 sign. State sales tax, payroll tax is a top priority - they will put you out of business quicker than the IRS. Insurance - figure about $50,000 / year for a small dealership. Bank floor plan of half a million - equipment comes due and has to be paid.  You will have to deal with short lines - no mfg builds all needed for what goes with the tractors.  Service vehicles, fork lift, delivery vehicles - shop equipment, about $100,000. Special tools - about the same. EPA and disposal permits must be investigated. Shrinkage, "where did those 2 disc blades go ? The inventory said we had 3 bearings - there are only two - where did the other go? etc. IT HAPPENS" - abut 1% - no one is perfect. Then you get those customers who have a lawyer on retainer.  And finally one gets to work 60 hours a week to manage all that for a 3-5% ROI.  I have been doing this for 47 years - I am a gearhead, love fixing issues, love farmers - consumer side - not so much - grew up in the business when $ investment was not what it is today. I will not let my kids in the business - I could get arrested for child abuse. :-)   Other than all this, I enjoy the rewards of helping others in parts, sales and service. Just not quick monetary rewards. There is a reason for mega dealers - there is the assumption bigger is better. AGCO has Ag Rev - company stores - for a reason.

Alex09: There is some really valuable advice noted by the previous posters.  It looks like AGCO is parked at #4 as far as the Ag. Tractor market behind #1 CNH Industrial NV,  then Deere, then CLAAS.

Here is a link that explains the above  - am sure the anticipated and actual results will likely vary as the agricultural buying group has a tendency to be more conservative than the average North American consumer -https://www.mordorintelligence.com/industry-reports/north-america-agricultural-tractor-machinery-market

Don't think I'd be going into selling new tractors and farm equipment right now. When (not if) the gov't money that has been steady flowing to farmers is cut off or severly reduced farming in the USA is going to be in for some huge changes.Focus will be on quality not quantity. No more free food from the USA fueled by the massive ag surpluses.

They are forcing the last remaining family owned dealers out around here and replacing them with Ag Revolution corporate stores.

Deere 2024 48 Billion (down 20% in 24 )
Case and NH  plus industrial 19 Billion
Agco 14 Billion
Claas around 7 Billion.
Kubota is harder to figure but around 17 billion , best I can convert.

My opinion is to - if you are thinking this - invest and step up your shop to cover the AGCO  umbrella- other brands too,, so many guys are looking for non dealer shops- dont get tied in with something that controls you! Just my opinion-
