It's time to go through the governor on my one ninety gas, and looking for advice. I've never tore into a governor in my life, just know that there are, springs, weights, and bushings in there. Is there a complete rebuild kit available for it that would have all of the "wear items" in it, or do I have to tear into it, see what it needs and buy parts piece by piece, or how does that battle go? It doesn't really maintain steady RPM's like it should, very erratic. Thus the reason that I think it's time. I know that it hasn't been touched in the 20 plus years that I've owned it, and for all I know, it probably has never been worked on. It's the 265, not the 301

Before disassembling anything, let's give the external parts a good look over, some lubrication and then proper adjustment. For the record, the 2000 series gas engines just didn't have a very good governor, as compared to other Allis engines and even some competitors. Maybe when they were brand spanking new, they were just barely OK, but under 2000 RPM I always felt they were very lazy and disappointing. So, check for any looseness in the carb throttle shaft arm to the shaft itself. If the spot weld or crimp has loosened up, you could be losing governor action right there. Also, inspect the ball joint on the link rod attached to the carburetors arm for any looseness. Spray some WD40 on the governor spring to reduce any friction between it and the plunger inside. Sometimes a little alignment tweaking is needed to prevent dragging of the governor spring with the parts it fits over. Lube WD40 the ball joint on the end of the link rod too. Lastly, place the throttle in the wide open position (engine off) and remove the clevis yoke pin on the governor's vertical arm. Use the threads on the yoke to shorten the link rod so it is about 1/3 of a hole short of opening the carbs throttle shaft 100%. This is critical to good governor action. Once you've done this try it out and see what you think. There is no governor "KIT" for those engines. One piece at a time if they are even available. These engines don't explode governor weights like a D-17 does.
