Plow for AC 170-175 ?

What size plow were sold with the 170-175 tractors? Would 3 -16 be too much? Thanks, Tracy

Either 3x14" or 3x16" of either fully or semi mount style should work well in most soils. Fully mounted you'll probably want a set of front weights when lifting it out of the ground.

A 4x14" semi mount steerable will work in most corn stubble.

Good plow lays will make having plow go in & stay in the dirt a lot easier.

Asking about plow sizing is kind of like asking how long is a piece of string. No real answer. So much depends on ground condition, soil type, plant structure (sod? alfalfa? grain stubble? burned down with 24D or still growing?), dryness, hills, etc. I always get a laugh when some folks claim their 50-60 HP tractor will pull something like a 4X14 with ease, and then you find out they're pulling in grain stubble. To me, the measure of a tractor's plowing capability is how well it can pull the plow in sod (and probably alfalfa to boot, which is really tough with it's long/thick roots).

I'd generally agree that 3X16 would probably be a good match for a 175. In light stubble it wouldn't even feel it. But in hilly clay with sod or alfalfa, it'd be a different story. At my father's farm, for instance, any of our 50 HP tractors will walk away with a 3X16 and not even break a sweat even in sod because it's nice, light, loamy soil. At our farm an hour North of there where we mainly plow fresh hay ground, and where it's much tougher, steeper, and rockier soil, the same 3X16 can bring our 180 or Ford 6600 to its knees. The White 2-105 is a much better match.

As to the original question; Tractor data does not give a plow rating for the 170/175 tractors but a series 4 D-17 is rated as a 5 plow tractor. My thinking is a lot of 4 bottoms were probably sold new with them. 14's mostly with a smattering of 16's.

In today's world if you have a nice 3-16's that would be a good match. Probably aren't looking to turn 40 acres a year with it are you?

One thing I will say about plowing with any A-C tractor (D-17 IV up thru 200) that has a factory 3-point hitch, the chances are pretty good that without some attention, the Traction Booster linkage will be mal-adjusted or missing or stuck, and therefore the TBoost system won't work. Also a very good chance the torsion bar system that signals the Traction Booster will be worn out as well. I can take a 3 x 16's mounted plow on a 180 or 185 without fluid in the rear tires and struggle to pull that plow with a non-functioning Traction Booster.

We ran a JD 4x16 semi mount on our 175. We had pretty sandy soil though.

I think a 3-16 plow with neither tractor would be a good match specially with fluid in the rear tires and some suitcase weights on the front of the tractor.

A 3 or 4 bottom fully mounted will pull easier. The longer and heavier the plow the harder it pulls. Monoframe not in 14 inch bottoms.
