Been in the New House for over ten years now. Been on the place since 2010 house built 2014/15 so Septic went in as the construct started so facilities could be established in the workshop as a benefit to workers and the wife in 14. So dreading that day that always comes had a local come out for a tank contents and drain system inspect, 10 year anniversary is a good point for that.
So the fella showed up as wife remained home that day, pulled the large concrete cover, and the two end stack caps, did a Sludge test, Minimal!! Looked to drain pipe cleanout for discharge from tank and then distribution box to field, all clear and clean. He asked wife if we cook and use a disposal, she noted yes then pointed at the French Drain Gray Water Drain field we had installed with Septic system. ALL the Kitchen Waste water, ALL the laundry water and the softener discharges go there she told the guy. Said she did not understand my desire for that but accepted I was likely correct in use of it. His response was smart idea, eliminates around 2/3 of the sludge a Septic will see. He reportedly grinned and stated 'See you in ten more years'.

NICE !!!! BRAVO !!!!! You're WAY 'smarter than the average bear' !!!!! I don't understand why ALL new 'country' house builds aren't required to do the gray water system. Up here they mandate a $2000 heat exchanger on the waste water drain though.....

That was a great idea. Most of the bad crud comes from the dish washer and clothes washer. I might modify the system at the farm to do that.

Had to re-run some laterals at the Farm 4 or 5 years ago and kicking myself for not bypassing more of the grey water that is running into the the Septic tank.

use the new laundry soap that is high effeciency and dont have all the CRAP in it... rinse 90% of the FOOD of the plates before the dish washer.. let the sink grinder grind it up into minc meat.

Many codes frown on gray water systems as all waste MUST enter a common tank -
I did a system for church next door where a new sanctuary was added to existing building . First I had them install a water meter for building to get flow rate for drain field sizing as it was also a daycare facilities and pre-school . As the existing system was built and installed in 1971 I inspected it and FAILED it in my inspection report . I designed the new system installing a 1,000 gal tank for kitchen waste as that areas is used for events and church dinners and funerals . That tank then flows to 2 - 1,500 gal tanks which feed the drain field which is 12" gravel-less perforated tubing covered in fabric . Field is sized to flow rate average . Used drop box distribution , 3 boxes each with 2 laterals with first box loading before flowing to next box laterals . Not a complete gray water system but that extra tank and split of system reduces grease and food scraps from entering system - that tank is checked yearly , others on 3 year check. Over 25 years of use now and works like day I designed and installed it |

Another system I installed is where old system failed as homeowner had iron filter for full house water softener - this caused a SLINE to plug existing system from iron filter .
Split system to send iron filter water and water salt softened waste to separate system . Other uses I have seen is a spit of gray water into a tank where heat is extracted from that water - then sent to main septic , scum and sludge are removed from that holding tank . |

the short story... guy round corner had a double wide lot.....sells house, gets resold, then 3rd or 4th guy splits lot into 2. sells new lot, new guy digs to build house, puzzled but rips up 'old septic bed'. OOPSY..... Seems no one knew THAT septic bed was for the original house !!!! Lotta 4 letter words were spoken when that happened..... Around here, that'd cost 50-60K to replace today.

DMILLER, thanks for sharing. Yours and others comments clarify why I got told not allowed to connect a new house to a septic system that was used about 10 years, then closed & unused another 5 years.
All they told me at county engineers office was:
"NO; you aren't allowed to do that". No explanation of any kind, even after asking several times. It had only drained the water in basement; floor drain, washer, softener discharge, water heater's annual flush, my wash sink & shower stall. I hadn't thought about sludges from washer, softener, etc. that they'd not have bacteria from black water to help destroy it. No kitchen wastewater, bathtub, sink or toilet water from main floor that all went into the pre-existing system. Cooking greases, left-overs went to the dog & cat pans, peelings and such went with trash to burn barrel. |

As far as been explained by local contractors, so long as NO human Excrement in the discharge from Sink and Laundry, No Problem. No Different than the Gray tank on a RV.
