Does the D17 diesel (equipped with power steering) have a different armature or shaft than a non-power steering model? Or is it just the end plate on the back of generator that’s different, to accommodate power steering pump mounting? I have a non-power steering tractor that I want to convert, and have most everything on hand except the pump and generator….

Prior to Series 3 models, the generator was different (longer armature and different backplate) and the P/S pump was different too. Kind of a bad system, as the S-3 and S-4 models were like the D-19, a belt driven pump above the generator. Getting the air cleaner out of the way helped with the change for the better.

Ok, thanks. Looks like i need to find both a gen and a pump then… I suppose they changed to a dry air cleaner and re-located the can on the III’s and IV’s…

Steve(NJ)will be able to tell you if the generator back plate and armature can be changed out as he rebuilt mine for My D17 diesel. It a unique beast but neat how AC did it. But as DOC said the separate belt driven PS pump offered later was a much better idea. The little drive shaft coupler to drive the PS alone was $95! Glad they still make them but wow. I rebuilt the pump, new gears, seals and between the generator and the PS pump I had $700 in it. But now I have a good working electrical and power steering so it was worth it to me.

I’m glad the parts to repair the pump are available still. An older feller who is also an allis guy near me told me that early chevrolet power steering setups were the same design… I haven’t verified that, but may be another potential source for pump and generator. You've got a decent chunk of change spent on refurbishing yours, but I haven’t seen a used setup for less than $400, and would likely need to freshen up any used parts I find. Luckily got all the rest of the parts dirt cheap, or probably wouldn’t consider the swap.

You might want to keep the generator you have... and just get a belt drive pump to mount up front ??

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Armature is definitely different. There are a couple backplates. Gotta' watch mixin' and matchin' with the old Gennie/P/S setups. You could probably use a setup off a 55-57 Chevy as long as you can find a complete setup. They're not cheap all greasy and used up so beware of what you buy. The rear spline on the long shaft Arms almost are always worn or shot. So watch buying a used setup off a old Chebby. Steve@B&B

Side view with the generator shield in place to prevent oil from running into the generator when changing the oil bath filter.

Power steering pump driven by generator set up was used on WD45 Diesels, D15 diesels, D19 diesels, and of course D17 diesels. I have seen non power steering models to have the same generator as power steering models. You can recognize these by the cover bolted on the rear of the generator. When you separate the pump from the generator, secure the coupling, easy to lose expensive to replace.
