transmission will not engage. I have the pedal adjusted to the proper setting. I broke the tracker and checked the clutch assembly, all in excellent condition. I can turn the tractor off, engage the tranny and engage the clutch and it move just fine. try to engage the trany when engine is running and all i get is grinding gears. is it possible the clutch pedal is not shjaft assembly? any ideas out there? thx

I believe you have the shims facing the wrong way. You should have 3 shims under each bolt. The flat spot on the shims faces outward. I made a mistake and faced them inward, it took me awhile to realize my mistake. The shims facing the wrong way will not let the clutch release or disengage properly. The flat side will catch the edge of the clutch disk. Faced them outward and all is well.

If you have the tractor back together, look up through access hole at the bell housing with a flashlight. With the tractor in neutral, have someone turn the engine with a socket on the crank. As the flywheel comes around to the shims, make sure the flat side is facing outward on all 3 shims under each bolt.

Check out what Rob mentioned to you there...if they're right, then I think the clutch disc is bent or in backwards...check the shims first though...

Is this happening after a new clutch install? That’s why I mentioned the shims. Did you just split the tractor and look at it or was any disassembly done? DR Allis made a good point to also check the pilot bearing. I should have asked more questions, just assumed a new clutch install.

just split the tractor and removed the clutch and the clutch assembly. clutch plate is is good. has the appropriate shims, had the clutch assembly looked at and is in working order. throw-out bearing is good. must be something in the trany.

Dan, I read through your post again. You asked if the clutch pedal was on the shaft correctly? Unless it has been removed for some reason I see no reason for it not to be correct. After all, I’m confident it worked before so something else must be wrong. Some more information, background on how the tractor started acting this would be of great help.
