    Posted: 23 Dec 2022 at 11:44am
I'm assembling a wd45 engine and when it came to the rear seal it seemed to extend out in each half much more excessively than what seems reasonable. This 2 piece seal came from a Reliance gasket kit. I realize they are supposed to stick out a bit and your not supposed to cut them back, but this one was over a 1/4" per side, so they need to crush down a total of a 1/2" or more.  The seals were very difficult to install in their slots, but I'm fairly confident they are in the full depth.
So I decided to bolt on the main bearing cap and torque it to the correct specs, it did crush down the seal and cap was tight on the shims, but the seal tightened up so much on the crank than I can hardly get it to turn, I'm not sure if the starter will even turn it over.
I did pre assemble the crank and main bearings before installing the seal to verify the fit and all was good.
When taking the main cap with the seal back off again I noticed the crushed felt seal pushed apart the narrow ears on the 'F' seals and it pushed up the aluminum seal retainer a little further from the oil pan/block parting line.
My question is, is this normal? I've installed rear main seals in D17's before and don't remember them having to crush down so much.
Do different seal manufacturers make theses seals with different crush amounts?

Thanks for your help

I'm sure you have probably watched Don Bradley's oil pan video that talks a lot about the seals. Oi l pan Gasket video - AllisChalmers Forum - Page 1

I had a similar problem a while back with aftermarket seals. The last set I got from Alex Wocking  at A&W Tractor Repair. I had no problems with the seals from Alex.

I just went through this. There are two different seals available. I got the wrong ones the first time. They're a thicker piece of felt and are also longer. Did you order using your engine serial number?

I did review the video from Don before installing this seal. The gasket set I got came with an overhaul kit, there wasn't an option for an engine serial number breakdown, but there were 2 different sets of rear main seals included. The other set was thicker and of a larger diameter, I'm assuming that's for a D17 or 170/175 though.
I'll check around at another supplier. Thanks for the comments

Thats what happens when manufacturers don't care about the quality of what they sell, only about making a buck. Here is a link to a discussion about the aftermarket vs OEM rear main seals for D17 engine:https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/d17-rear-main-seals_topic185917.html

Glad to hear you watched Don's gasket video! Here is a pic of the Aftermarket (left) vs OEM (right) seals for a WC-WD45 part # 227120. You can see the difference in height and when you attempt to press these inside a circle of a set circumference, the thicker one will be longer. If you want the correct ones, we keep them in stock. Make sure you use the F gaskets also, otherwise you will have oil leaks. Also if you had thin paper behind the old felt seals, it is supposed to stay behind the new seals.

Thanks everyone, lots of good info here. This confirms what I'm seeing. I'm going to remove these seals and get the correct fitting ones.
