I have a D12 that needs a new steering wheel. Unfortunately, a previous owner welded the nut on the shaft. I have looked, unsuccessfully, for a new steering shaft. Suggestions?

Break off the rest of the plastic, grind the weld off flush with the nut using an angle grinder, use a die grinder and carefully grind the root of the weld out, should leave enough of the threads to thread a new nut back on. If you don’t have a die grinder you can grind off the weld above the nut and split the nut with a cold chisel, then carefully clean up what weld is left above the threads with a grinder. Otherwise there’s a couple used shafts on eBay.

I have been checking Ebay daily. I have never seen a steering shaft for a D12. I can find them for a D14, D15 or a D17, but none for a D10 or D12. Where did you find them?

My bad, I had d14 stuck in my mind. Could you shorten one from a d14?

I'd grind the nut off and take the shaft to a machine shop and have them weld a new end on it.

I have done that on a couple B... i shortened the shaft on a couple, and have cut the top 2 inches off the shaft on one and welded a stud back on.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I am wondering if the shaft os hollow (I don't think it is). If it was I could probably get a bolt with the right thread and put it in the lathe and turn it down to the ID of the shaft.

My D10 has the same issue, nut welded on but unlike yours, it is welded on farther down the shaft below the steering wheel opening.

That's a later model steering shaft with a splined end which the steering wheel sits on.  Best to find a used shaft from a D15 or 17 and shorten the opposite non-splined end.

Doesn't the steering wheel have a spline? If so welding a bolt will not work.
