Will a loader from a D17 fit a 180-185 without any modifications? They just used spacers for the 17 frames correct? Or are the brackets actually different?

No spacers on 180-185. Rear axle brackets are longer.

In referencing the Op Manual for a 500 Series loader for D17, D17IV and D19 tractors I find differences between loader frames and the use of spacers between D17IV and earlier series D17s. So it may also make a difference which 500 Series loader you have. The u-bolt for the early D17 series is secured to the axle inboard of the fender bracket and the angle it bolts to is mounted to the inside of the side frame of the loader. No spacers are used between the loader and the tractor frame. The u-bolt on the Series IV is secured to the axle outboard of the fender bracket and the angle it bolts to is mounted on the outside of the rear part of the loader frame. Spacers are used on the Series IV.
PS Thanks Dr Allis for your help with the hydraulics design on my Series 3.

I seem to remember, that in later years those rear braces were made to fit 180/185's and then another set of holes allowed you to shove them forward to fit D-17's and 170/175's. So, it's going to depend what vintage of loader you have.

Ok.I saw one for sale on Facebook on a series 4. Its an early loader, has the sunburst logo. I'm looking to buy a 180 or 185 and would like a 500 loader for it. I'd like find one I wont need to modify to fit.

Our 500 loader was installed by the local Allis Chalmers dealership in 1970. Installed on our 1962 D-17 (gas).
The frame is adjustable. It will fit an Allis Chalmers 180 (diesel). No shims required for the 180 to mate to the frame rails. Shims are required for the D-17.

The owner of the loader from Facebook says the loader had no shims. Would/could that be correct? Its a series 4 thats its on. Axle braces are adjustable and mount to the outside of fenders.

So, let's say that loader was manufactured before 1965. I believe the mighty One-Ninety came out in August of 1964. Any model 500 loader built prior to the introduction of the One-Ninety would have been built WITHOUT shims because the One-Ninety was the FIRST tractor to have the wider side frames. The early 500 loaders would only have been for D-17 and D-19 tractors, both with the narrow width side frames. That loader won't fit a 180 or larger tractor.
