Would someone please recommend a charger with trickle charge capability? My generator works really good on providing regulated charge but it’s the initial starting that really draws on the battery. I just replaced the battery with 750cca and would really like to give it a trickle charge out in that cold barn. BTW, do I need to disconnect the battery when connecting the battery maintainer to it?? TIA

You can buy 6 volt versions of the 'battery maintainer'. It will shut off when done, check battery, come back on when needed. No need to disconnect battery,but better as any corrosion around the ammeter could drain the battery,keeping the maintainer on,so great ,while I'm typing this , I'd recommend disconnecting battery.... just leave the 1/2" wrench there ,cause you'll need it to hookup the battery.........and I don't want to be blamed for you having to trudge though 3' of snow to go back to the shop to get the wrench !!!

It's always a good idea to disconnect the Battery and charge it on it's own without Car, Truck, or Tractor connected to it. There's a few good Battery maintainers out there on the market. We carry the Deltran in particular. The 6V version puts out around 1.25 amps and the 12V version around 4 amps. You mentioned there's a big draw on the Battery when starting the Tractor. You should pull the Starter motor and have a rebuilder run through it to make sure the Armature is okay, along with the rest of the components. HTH Steve@B&B

KC.... 6 volt systems have a tendency to do that... You might want to do a " routine checkup" for the winter.. Pull the battery cables / ground cable / starter terminal and look at all the cables and ends.. Wire brush or sand paper the terminals and clamps.. this includes the battery posts.. they might have a BLACK OXIDE coating that looks DULL.. Everything should be BRIGHT and SHINNY... if you have corrosion inside the ends of the wire clamps, it might be time for NEW BIG CABLES..

I have a mixture of Deltran, and Noco. One is as good as the other in the maintainer applications. Neither are bottom of the barrel in quality but I've had Deltran units in service over 12 years without a single fault, and the Noco brand about eight years with the same results. The Noco is easily selectable between six, and 12V where the Deltran has a flip switch through the rear of the case requiring a small screwdriver to operate.

I use the predecessor to this one:
I've had it for so long that they made a newer version...but mine has been going strong for about 10 years.

Yes, I use solar chargers on all my tractors to keep them charged, everytime I go to the garage I move them to a different battery. I have 3 solar chargers in my building.

Put dielectric grease on contacts.
New big cables to starter and ground. Battery shut off switch
Will keep you out of trouble.

I use this one also. Have had good luck with it and do not disconnect my battery. Local mechanic said it was a good idea to use a battery maintainer, and seems to help especially in the cold weather.

I like that it's 6 or 12 volt. It rarely gets unplugged, except when moving it from one battery to another.
