pipe for trailer ramp's

I have a 14 K deck over trailer. The pipe is bent that crosses the back of the trailer holding the foldup ramp's. Should I just buy a steel pipe to replace it? or do I need to buy something special ? The other thing is the beaver tails getting rotted I was wondering about replaceing it with steel angle iron instead of treated lumber. Whats everyones thoughts

I believe the ramp pipe on our trailer is plain old 2" schedule 40 pipe

do you have a center support, or does the pipe just support at both ends ?  Center bracket or some stabalizer helps with the load.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

nothing wrong with angle iron on the tail... helps get some grip when loading.

On my tri-axle tag trailer for hauling crawler and backhoe I used angle iron welded to frame members on the beaver tail . It had a good part in allowing no slip when loading as well as allowing any trapped material to fall off when loading . 
 For loading in winter stopped any slipping from ice or snow caught on deck or tracks

yes it has a flange that the pipe runs through on both sides and the center.

Normal PIPE that you get from the Hardware store will be schedule 40 ... If you have a steel Supplier near you, you could get a schedule 80 pipe ( thicker wall) and be stronger..

What is the difference between Sch 40 and Sch 80 pipe?


The major difference between schedule 40 and schedule 80 pipe is the wall thickness, inside diameter, and their weight. Schedule 80 will have a greater wall thickness, a smaller inside diameter and a higher weight than Schedule 40 pipe at a given nominal pipe size.

Road salt rust-probably? Loading ramps each have perpendicular & horizontal frame supports under each ramp~Maybe, maybe not? If not, then during loading of equipment, it’s weight bridges too far & helps bend dovetail’s ramp pipe, which is probably half way ~ weakest point??
Try installing 1/4” wall steel black pipe. And if needed, add ramp supports. Got any photos?

pipe is hollow.roadsalty water gets inside,weakens/rusts the pipe over the years.
you could replace with a  SOLID BAR, but it'll give you two hernias and empty your bank account !
as other have said, use a sked80 pipe but.. weld ends on plug it and add 2-3-4 1/8" holes along the rear edge. Use these to spray a LOT of rustchek,oil, or similar. when done, dab some caulking to plug the hole ,or just leave them.

The trailer we have at work with ramps is a solid pipe that the ramps pivot on.
On the farm: Agco Allis 9695, 7060, 7010, R66, Farmall H, and Farmall F20 (Great Grandpa's)

Most that i have seen that are BENT are not rusted.... The  ramps have been overloaded and bent the pipe or damaged the center bracket that supports the pipe / bar.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

When I built the dovetail onto the back of this flatbed single drop trailer I used "drill stem" steel for the ramps to rotate around on. This was 1983. I just snapped the photo as pulled the trailer out to finish up the rebuild of the same dovetail citing rust eating the xmembers away. Those "hinges" have never bent on me as the wall is 11/16" thick.....

For the ramp hinges on one of my dove tail trailers I used old hydraulic cylinder rods that I had around the shop that had the chrome flaked off from a previous equipment repair.
