Well this is weird. Low range 4 th gear low PD is supposed to be 5.2 mph. 3 rd gear high PD is supposed to be 5.8 mph. I was looking for just a bit more efficiency so I tried the 3 rd high. Buttometer didn’t notice much difference. Got the stopwatch on the phone, it’s actually a little slower. A pass was 5 minutes 22 seconds with the 4 th low, 5 minutes 38 seconds in 3 high. And yes I checked both directions to rule out hills and slippage.
Is this a bad sign? |

What are you pulling ? Its plain to see and tell if the engine is at peek power and the rear wheels arent turning - Pd slipping

Engine sound is normal, wheels are steady speed. Pd stays down, pulls engine down more than when in low but not bad, seems normal for each gear, just slow. Doesn’t seem as slow as 3 low would be

Is the speed sticker correct? Just wondering out loud. I don't think my op man is same as cab sticker. Several different charts for 8000 series as different model models ran different rpm etc...guy hates to mess something up because he thought it was ok.

Set two markers 500 ft apart. Approach each marker at full throttle in each of the two gear selections and count the seconds between the markers. No tillage tool in the ground !! Just the bare tractor on firm footing.

That's the way I do it. My now antique hand-held GPS gives you speed to two decimal places. My WFE 45 will run a little over 6 mph in second gear. Keep thinking I'll check it while plowing to see how much tire slip is happening.

Well yeah, I suppose that could be more accurate. However I did my measurement on several passes, both directions, and even a round trip. Right to the second each time. And with a 5 minute time span, that eliminates a lot of the guess work and variables. I have a light bar on a different tractor, I can rig up power and check. But I’m telling ya, it’s for sure going slower. I suppose if it picks up 1 mph in this test, something must be slipping big time trying to use it in that gear. Yet works perfect in 4. Weird. If you have a smart phone. You can get a mph app. We used it to figure new gear speeds on pulling tractor.

I looked for one of those and never found one I was satisfied with. Knowing the gps was very accurate I didn't try real hard for a phone app.

Update.
Set up markers and got out the stop watch again. Nothing hooked to the tractor, bare tractor, flat ground, but checked both directions anyway for thoroughness. 3 rd high PD which is supposed to be .6mph faster is actually slightly slower, just like in the field Guess the sticker is wrong? |

3rd and 4th gear speeds overlap on that model. 3rd gear is 4.7 and 5.8 MPH low/high button. 4th gear is 5.2 and 6.5 MPH low/high button. This is with 18.4 x 38 rubber @ 2300 RPM no load. Only the 7030/50 do NOT overlap between 3rd and 4th gear. 7050's 3rd gear 5.6 and 7.0. 4th gear 7.0 and 8.8. Don't know what you've got going on. Maybe someone has had the transmission apart before you got it ?

Well I’m at least owner number two, not counting the tractor jockey I bought it from. So who knows if it’s been apart or not?
Rubber and RPM are as you say. Time is precious….but I might try to hook up the light bar or something and see if I can get a mph reading, see if by chance it matches a 7050 or whatever. |

My point is to shift progressively faster, you'd go 3 low---4th low----3 high---- 4th high. Shifting like this should show an increase in speed every time. Makes no difference what the actual MPH is, it should get progressively faster by this shift pattern. at the same RPM's each time.

Um, yeah. I know your point, that’s what I was trying to accomplish in the field. Trying to go just a bit faster, seemed like the tractor could do it. 4th high was too much. My point is, if the Mph happens to match that of the other model, maybe it indicates the tranny was swapped. Not that it really matters or definitively proves it, just an interesting piece of information. One thing is for sure, it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do. But doesn’t seem to be bothering anything either, so idk, other than just keep an eye on it. |

Rereading the MPH of the 7030/7050 in Doc's post, I don't think that's what's going on either (tranny swap), don't think it's going that fast. Weird.

Wouldn't it be best to run in "hi button" so it's going straight through, instead of through another set of gears? I realize you may be looking for a particular speed, but I'd think you'd want to choose a gear that lets you upshift to hi button on the pd, giving you a downshift if needed for tough spots of turning on the ends.

I don't know Ed? How much better is that? I truly don't know. Had I been able to use 3rd like the speed sticker sort of indicated, then what you say is what I would have been doing. But I couldn't see going a little slower than I already was going just for that reason. Maybe I don't know how important that is. . . .After the spring we had, time was kinda of the essence you might say!
