 Topic: 100 series Grills

We invested some money to get some metal front grilles made for 180/185 etc. They are going to be expensive, but I need a couple anyway. Probably be about $675. At this price it will have expanded metal as the grille slotted material. IT will be welded, not stamped (best quote we could get to stamp them was a $60,000 set up fee) The OEM slotted material is EXPENSIVE , about $400 for a sheet. That would put the price up to nearly a grand - What do you guys think?

I know there are a lot of people looking for good grilles. I do think it is a good item to reproduce. People know that good grilles are hard to find. Those who are very serious about making their tractor look like new would buy one for sure. Some may complain about the price at first but eventually buy one after constantly looking at the big empty of where a grille should be. If I needed one, I would buy it, if it was identical to the original and the quality is there.

A picture always sells a product. That’s a big price but they are difficult to come by. Rebuilding one is time consuming and often difficult. Quite surprised no one produces them as folks ran over them when they fell off due to the poor latch design. That’s why mine is bolted on. No chance of loosing it, I spent a lot of time straightening it out. Good friend of mine welded the brackets for me. Thanks for getting this important part sourced Tbran.

A good CNC plasma table operator could cut the slot pattern from thin sheet. Look up PlasmaCam.

This sound very interesting as I am in need of a grill for a 185. I look forward to seeing some pictures and would entertain the original slotted style as the grill is the icing on the cake in my opinion. Grew up learning to drive a 185 and still have our farm's original 185....needing a grill

What size is the sheet (the OEM for $400) you're referring to? Is it for just one grille? I've rebuilt a few of these grilles. On the last one, the customer supplied the repro mesh. It wasn't too terribly expensive back then. Less than $100. It was just like OEM as far as I could tell. I just had to fold (bend) the sides to fit, prior to spot welding.

sheet metal has increased upteen hundred %. Rolled sheet metal like you see going down the interstate on flatbeds went from 570 /ton to $1,800 / ton in one year per a plant mgr. who came by. That was 6 months ago.

Definitely something to look into. The 170 and 175s seem to be the most sought after. I know of two guys that bought tractors just to get the grill to put on another tractor in recent years.
The later One-Ninety grills seem to be in demand as well.
As far as prices are considered, I know of people paying as much as $1000 for a 170 grill and close to that for others.

Would this manufacturing run include the 190xt 3 bar grill? My bars are bent up and some dents on the front edge too. I haven't priced getting it fixed but I suspect quite expensive, if at all possible. I see a lot of the slant fender 190xts, which I believe should have the 3 bar grill, using the no bars grill. So if that is only what is available then would probably still be interested. Are you wanting deposits or just collecting interest at this point?

There are multiple versions, which will make this even more complicated. One-Seventy is a smaller grille and has the rolled front edge where the later 170 and 175's had the squared off front edge. One-Ninety and XT's two cross bar grilles had the rolled edge on the front and deep inset screen. Later One-Ninety and XT's were just missing the cross bars with the same rolled front edge. Early One-Eighty's were same as cross-barless One-Ninety and XT's with rolled front edge/deep screen up to a point. Early model 185's were rounded front edge/deep screen and then (I think) when the 200 came out (or thereabouts) the squared off front edge with the screen moved an inch closer to the front was used. I think One-Eighty's got the same grille at that point in time ??) All 200's (I think) were probably the same shell as the 185's with a different grille screen material. EDIT: The old 2-crossbar grille on early 190/190XT's were eventually superseded to the no-cross bar square edged grille 70256502 like the 185's got.

If it is the same size slot, then blanks could be made if someone could share a size for the blank you need. If the slot is bigger, they could be laser cut which is slower, thus more expensive. Excellent initiative. Your proposal and cost seems very reasonable to reproduce a key part of these great Allis Chalmers tractors. I cringe when I see a 100 Series tractor with a damaged or missing Grill.
Grill Latches/Grill..........The OEM Design was more than satisfactory, but the Latches need to maintained and adjusted so they are really really really tight. The Grill is a very snug fit all the way around the perimeter with the engine/radiator Hood. This tight fit provides the support for the Grill, so its weight/load is transferred to the mounting face of the Hood. The Latches hold the Grill in place to maintain the snug fit.
I have a 1975 185 my father purchased new and the Grill has a few minor dings from contact with "unknown objects over the years", but has never come loose from the tractor. The Latches were always very tight. The same Latch on the Battery Box has also stood the test of time and wear.
I can grab the Grill on the 185 and shake the tractor. There is no movement between the Grill and the Hood
Now, ...........our 185 Grill benefited from the OEM Suitcase Weights and Holder mounted on the front of the tractor, which acted as a "bumper" on many occasions. Without this protection, I am certain our Grill would have been damaged. The OEM Grill was not designed for heavy blows or external loads
Hope these comments/observations help you with your project, and raise awareness on the importance of maintenance/adjustment of the Grill fit to the tractor

I believe so, although I've never took time to measure and currently don't have any to compare. Surely someone does....
I've certainly noticed a drastic price increase on sheetmetal this past year. What once was about $15 worth of material on a 100 series grille would now be about $60, retail....talking just the mesh screen. So at $400, there's definitely been some other drastic increase in manufacturing.
