Don't need a long one, just around my 70X60 chicken pen. Are the ones sold by TSC good? Neighbor's husky is getting in/killing my chickens, killed 7 so far this year. I need to put an end to this. I won't shoot a pet dog but would love to knock it on it's arse a few times with juice to stop it. I set up a game camera and caught the bastard doing it. Talking to the owner is a waste of time, I've done it enough times the last couple years about his chicken killer. What blows my mind, even with the pictures, the county sheriff won't do anything about it. Told me it's not illegal in ND for a dog to kill chickens. They would not come out and ticket or even talk to the owner.... warned me if *I* did anything to that eff'n dog, I would be liable...really? Talked down to me on the phone making it sound like I was in the wrong... WTF? The older I get, the more I hate worthless law enforcement..... |

60 x 70 is not really large.. I would think the charger would work... How does the dog get INSIDE the pen ? Might want to address that area.

120 volts on the wire would be a better deterrent but that has some major risks. I have a solar fencer that does a good job against raccoons and my lab got nip from it and won't go near it period. Don't even need the power on. Will need several rows so it can't jump over.
If dead set against a bullet, how bout a BB? Crossman pump up might make him think twice but may learn its safe when you're not in sight |

For the birds I used electronet and a Parmak Solar fencer. Worked great. No loses from any predator.Wouldn't recommend the Solar for anything bigger though.

They are pretty effective when I had birds and pigs. Never had a problem other than airborne on the birds.
One thing I didn't consider was the lightning it brought in close to the house. Got hit a couple of times. First was after spending a few hundred on electric netting a storm rolled in and nailed it. Blew huge holes in it and set a tree on fire. Got hit 2 other times on the house. 1 blew out all the electronics we had in the house. the 2nd time was just random. Ceiling fan controller etc.. Keep it away from your house or be fast on your feet naked in the middle of the night to shut it off. Don't ask how I know that. |

Our collie would kill chickens. My dad broke her of killing chickens by tying a dead chicken to the electric fence. After she found out the shocking truth of her actions, she never messed with another chicken.

Your county sheriff would not last more than 22 seconds in a courtroom, not only on this statement, but also for the statement denying your right to dispatch a predator that is attacking your livestock... particularly if the predator came onto your farm. Your county sheriff is obviously not well-versed in livestock and trespassing law... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE 36. LIVESTOCK. CHAPTER 36-21. GENERAL PROVISIONS.36-21-10 Dogs, wolves, and coyotes worrying livestock or poultry may be killed. Any person who kills any dog, wolf, or coyote kept as a domestic animal is not liable in any civil action to the owner of the animal: 1. When the person sees such animal in the act of killing, chasing, worrying, or damaging any livestock or poultry; or 2. When the person discovers evidence that the animal recently killed or chased sheep. Credits S.L. 1890, ch. 155, § 9; S.L. 1939, ch. 13, § 1; S.L. 2017, ch. 68 (S.B. 2028), § 11, eff. July 1, 2017.
36-21-11 Liability for damages to livestock by dogs. The owner of any dog that kills, wounds, or chases any sheep or other domestic animal or poultry belonging to another person is liable to that person for all resulting damages. If more than one dog, owned by different persons, participates in the killing, wounding, or chasing of sheep or other domestic animals or poultry, the owners of the dogs may be sued jointly, and a joint verdict and judgment may be rendered against the owners. If one or more of the defendants pays a joint judgment and if the damages committed by the dogs may be prorated, the payor or payors may receive contribution from the defendants who have not paid. Credits S.L. 1890, ch. 155, § 8; S.L. 1927, ch. 252, § 1; S.L. 2017, ch. 68 (S.B. 2028), § 12, eff. July 1, 2017. Codifications: R.C. 1895, § 1570; R.C. 1899, § 1570; R.C. 1905, §§ 1958, 1959; C.L. 1913, §§ 2642, 2643; R.C. 1943, § 36-2111. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ but it is very likely he is attempting to mislead you into acquiescence to avoid becoming subject to responsibilities noted in ND's animal law § 36-21.2-08 Consider a farmer who had a flock of 20,000 chickens, and that same dog were to go inside... and the farmer shot the dog... do you THINK that any sensible court would rule on the side of the dog's owner? In most cases, the fact that the owner allowed his dog to trespass onto your property puts THEM in liability for the actions of their pet. If, after advising the neighbor, he takes no action, any losses of your livestock now become part of claim in a civil suit. I would dispatch the dog next time it broke into the poultry shelter. But to prove a certain amount of 'reasonable action', I would put up a seive barrier for the dog FIRST, and place a trail cam to catch pix or footage of it. What's a sieve barrier? Get several 4x8 sections of 4x4 wire fence mesh, place them on stakes 18" off the ground, horizontally. Erect this in the path between where the chickens forage, and where their protection is. Chickens will easily run UNDER the mesh... the dog cannot, instead, he will attempt to go OVER, and fall THROUGH. His feet will thrash and become entangled in the mesh, at which point, you will have a dog. You can then snare the dog, and call the county animal control officer to come extract the animal to custody, or dispatch and dispose of it as you feel worthy. If the AC officer takes custody, they are obligated under § 36-21.2-08 to provide for all care for the dog, and forward those costs onto the owner, and document the incident into legal record, along with your complaint, at which time, your civil suit for lost poultry will be supported per § 36-21-11

Choose another weapon..say a paintball gun and flourescent pink balls. The won't kill the dog, make him sore AND he'll show up pretty good at night ! If the neighbour complains to cops, then the cops HAVE to deal with the dog NOT you.

Seen that paintball game deployed!! Cattle Farmer close by had three dogs get in pasture and run his cows near to death, he set up a blind and paintballed a couple of them where the Owner had to take them to a Vet to see if would hurt them. Also the Idjit called the cops as to being paintballed where the farmer had informed the sheriff he had painted a couple of them and what color used. Owner got ticket for unrestrained dogs and livestock harassment, vet had a good laugh, stated she told him could have been worse as in REAL bullets. Dogs never showed up again.

The paintball is a great solution to dogs running loose and new to the country citydots that just know Fido would never do anything to hurt anything or anybody. There where several feuds in the old days because O'l Fido was home when the folks went to sleep, and when they woke up too. But O'l Fido had been out and about and been in a lot of shenagains in the dark.
Even in crazy Calif, as far as I it is legal to shoot stray dogs harming livestock.

Thank-you for this. I have sent a nice message to the deputy. Found/sent a copy of the link and asked him to read/understand it as it pertains to the law. Doubtful he will reply but I will see. I thought I was in the right lawfully, and although I will not shoot a pet dog, I am a dog lover myself, I demand that law officials know what they are talking about before they open their mouth. I just can't imagine any cop not wanting to leave his warm house to help out a taxpayer if by nothing else asking that dog owner to control his killer dog. These chickens are my pets and deserve to live just as a pet dog does.

You could always grab the dog, shave a big stripe down his back and use flourescent yellow paint to paint the racing stripe on him, then return him after dark...

In a less friendly world I worked at LONG LONG Ago, I had to live in a Company supplied Rental House for my short tenure at a shop. Long story longer and more boring was a Dog, neighbor's Dog he let out EVERY DAY at sunrise to let the dog run for a few hours before his wife went to work and LONG after he had left. Problem Mutt, actually papers German Shepard just that the neighbor dude was a jerk and the dog loved dumping over trash cans on trash day where the service in CA at the time used Side loader semi Automated Trash trucks, NO Loose Bags nothing but the Company furnished fit the truck cans and ONE guy in the truck. Several times I had to haul my garbage into the shop as the dog had dumped my can and the trash guy just drove on by.
Well being Mechanic and having access as well a Collection of BALL Bearings, had a Wrist Rocket Slingshot and was determined to stop that mutt from dumping trash. Stayed home that morning, got trash out saw the dog running the street then as expected dumped my can. Front door Open standing by I pocketed a LARGE bearing Ball and stretched it out to pound the beast in the butt as HARD I could manage, sighted up let it fly and the dog jumped staring RIGHT AT ME, WHOP, dog down. Had hit the dog SQUARE in the forehead, retrieved the impaled ball, dog was D E D Dead, put in trash can picked up litter closed lid off to work. Two days later owner comes walking down street, said Hi he then asks have I seen his dog? I said yes, last trash day in my trash can. I then turned went back inside, he went merrily on his way whistling and calling for the dog.

A nearby sheep farmer when I was growing up did not put up with loose dogs . Loose running dogs would run his sheep to a point the stress would kill them . If the dog had tags he would find owner of dog , delivered dead dog and dead sheep to their doorstep demanding payment for dead sheep. They tried calling the law on him several times and plenty of heated discussions. Deputies would side with the sheep farmer. In our county there is an ordinance that your dog must be controlled, doesn't have to be on a leash or confined to an area but if loose you have to be responsible for its actions .

Several years ago when my kids were in 4-H, they had sheep for projects. We had a neighbor who had a german shepard that had a habit of getting into kids 4-H sheep, running them, and eventually killing a couple.I paid neighbor visit twice with no action of keeping dog home. Third time, the 30-06 came out and dog didn't go home!

The other 'dog-b-gone' method is to fill one of them super soaker water guns with real stinky, dollar store perfume and aim for the dogs nose. Squirt him real good..he won't be able to smell for 2-3 days. It MIGHT take a 2nd 'application' but doubtful.

I don't think abusing the dog is the answer. Personally, I think anyone that takes a dog for a "100-mile ride and kicked out" (abandoned), should be locked up!
The problem is the dog owner and the Sheriff.

I agree 100% Owner is a moron, doesn't work, drinks alot and talking to him as I have over the years is worthless. His sister/brother-in-law owns the property and let him live there. Brother-in-law is a law professor and pretty arrogant but has mentioned *mike* has problems.... duh..... I have had conversations via e-mail with him(brother-in-law lately to no avail. Believe me when I say everyone in the neighborhood thinks very poorly of this group. I will try an elec. fence when I go to town to get a charger probably today. This eff'n dog was in my chicken run again this morning...... grrrr ![]() As you can see, I have 6ft tall fencing all around the pen/garden. Keeps the deer out but not eff'n dogs. The dog must be climbing over the fence. Watch some u-tube videos on how they do it. For my garden, I put an electric hot wire standing away from the fence about 8". One low, one at the top. That kept the raccoons out. The chain link is grounded. |
