Why would an '05 vintage 2x4 dually need to have "one" of the outer rear wheels removed to have a "lift-type" wrecker hook-up and tow it ?? This is from my Ford OM

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

So Re Read that Section of the Manual, that is for FLATBED ROLLBACK Towing where with ONE Wheel Removed the truck will sit within the dimensions and side rails of that Roll Back Bed. NOT for FLAT tow or Lifted by Chains Tow.

![]() ![]() ![]() well it is obviously TOO WIDE for his lift arms / brackets... They are adjustable in and out for small cars up to bigger pickups.. But the DUALLY is obviously too wide with all 4 wheels.

And here I was going to convince him he had all his beer loaded on one side of the box so the tow truck operator was taking the outside tire & wheel off to balance the load.

Well MR. D, I did in fact "re-read" the OM , before I make any insinuations against your reply, WHAT do you consider a "WHEEL LIFT " tow ???

Why it an "OUTER REAR" removal ?? Isn't the "inner" wheelbase the same as a NON DUALLY ???

Well now, since you EDITED the OP as to TYPE of Wrecker there is answers. YOU stated lift type, there are SEVERAL of that style INCLUDING a Wheel Lift which requires NOT JUST One but Both outer rims of a Dually Removed as the Lift Saddles are designed but for ONE tire. Is also a Chassis Lift or one that can lift by the Axle alone. So once YOU corrected your misrepresented statement then the Correct Answers can be given.
Closer to that MAGIC TTP point? Not really as will remain that far behind everyone else.

Not really, YOU failed to be specific, a lot counts upon what is Asked and HOW Asked, you asked Poorly, as usual and got the usual type responses. When you use Diction accordingly then answers will be more direct and as such more directed.

had my dually towed ona flatbed wrecker one day, he didn't remove any rear wheel, just drove accordingly! the outer fenders on my dually is wider than the wheel set. our tow operators pull/haul oversized loads all the time! i used to be a tow driver...lots of people would cringe at what i towed!

"Why it an "OUTER REAR" removal ?? Isn't the "inner" wheelbase the same as a NON DUALLY ???"
FYI.
Wheelbase is measured from center of front axle to center of the rear
axle (lengthwise of the vehicle). If you had a multiple rear axle
arrangement (not commonly found on a factory built dually pickup, in case you wonder) you might say you have an "inner" wheelbase, if you measure to the forward rear axle. The
distance from one side to the other is called tread width. It is measured
from center to center of the tire treads, across the vehicle. On a dually
the rear axle tread width is measured to the center distance between the inner
and outer duals. Then there is inner track and outer track dimension measured between the inner and outer dual treads respectively. On dual wheel vehicles the rear axle tread width (center between the duals), not the inner track width, may match the front tread width. Edited by Jim.ME - 30 Mar 2022 at 8:03am |

Maybe auto-correct thought he might understand the difference in wheelbase and tread width better in blue.
