 Topic: 170D 3 point problem

I have a 170D It has 3 remotes and 3 point hitch. the issue is, that the 3 point will lift but won't drop. When the engine is off the hitch will drop. I've adjusted the screw on the back of the spool and it doesn't seem to do anything. I've adjusted that screw in the past, (years ago) to adjust the rate of drop. Anyone have any idea as to what might be the problem?

More than likely is the position control or traction booster linkaage stuck

Linkage under the console is rusted and putting pressure on the traction booster valve. There are a couple of pivot points under there. They need to move freely with your hand. If one is stuck, it will do this. Take it apart, clean, put anti seize on it and reinstall. The valve might also be sticking in the body, but most of mine have had stuck linkages.

My series 4 D17 had the same problem, linkage rusted. Some PB blaster curried the problem.

Both rear hydraulic levers must be clear FORWARD. If that isn't the problem, stand at the rear of the tractor and look at the hydraulic valve stack. On the far right, closest to the fender, there's a valve section with an acorn nut. Above the acorn nut is a short aluminum cover/cap with 2 allen screws. Remove the allen screws and cap. Take a hammer and punch and drive the spool forward as far as it will go. Replace cover/cap/spring. Test the results.

Provided the two rear hydraulic levers are all the way FORWARD, driving the Traction Booster/Position control spool all the way in/forward, may cure your problem short term. There is still a good possibility there is linkage rusty/sticking/stuck and this procedure doesn't fix that. There are three places in particular of pivoting linkage that have the highest chance of getting rusted in place from lack of use. When these tractors were used all the time and especially the hydraulic hitch, things stayed free. But, when they haven't been used in years, the problems begin.

Thanks, I took the linkages apart cleaned them up and applied never seize. Took the cap off on the back of the valve, the hex screw had backed out a few turns, i turned it back in and used a punch and gave it a few wacks and the threee point raises and lowers now, it lowers a little slower than i think it used to but it works. I can move bales now. I appreciate the help!!

The last two I did I just looked at the valve stack while moving the two rear levers and noted which valve did not move. I then reached in with a pair of Channel-locs and gave the valve a little twist and it popped right out.

DR ALLIS: Would the procedure for freeing the Remote ram on AC175(it raises but will not drop) be the same??? I am reluctant to use a punch on that spool (Remote section of the valve stack) without experience or without knowing exactly what I am doing!!! Thanks

Better description needed. Your remote lever(s) have four positions: Raise (back) hold (middle) lower (forward) and float (clear forward and stays there). So, is your lever moving to all four positions?? (with engine off) If so, you cannot get the load or hydraulic cylinder to lower ?? Sounds like a coupler/coupling problem using one or two hoses. If you cannot move your lever to all four positions, remove the rubber plug at the rear of the valve (rubber plug gone ??) and flood inside that cavity with WD40 and try and work the lever back and forth. Having the rubber plug gone for years is a bad idea.
