Removed the front end of my new to me 160 this morning. Surprisingly the front end wasn’t difficult to remove and actually fairly balanced. Will pull the engine Sunday after church to hopefully deliver to the engine builder on Monday.

Mine doesn't have a horn! Are you re-doing the whole tractor? Does the 3 point lift work well?

Doing a full engine rebuild and clutch replacement. 2 cracked sleeves, blown head gasket. Rear main seal leaked as oil began to leak out of the bell housing when I removed the lower frame rail bolts, so I will also do a clutch even though I was told the clutch operated fine. Will take a look at it when I get the engine pulled. Neat tractor although parts are getting hard to get.

3 pt works well Brian. I have a good block that has already been magna fluxed in case there is an issue with the block.

Nice! Having the clutch rebuilt on mine was one of the more expensive parts of the project. Couldn't find an exchange so I had to ship mine off to have it rebuilt and shipped back.

Never driven one. Never worked on one. It seems a non-functioning 3-point hitch is a VERY common complaint on the One-Sixty model. I don't know what the cure is, but it is almost a given there will be trouble in that area at some time.

This tractor was used primarily as a rake tractor and for moving wagons. Gary also used a 3 point sprayer and bush hog on it. I personally have not used the 3 point but he said it worked well. He never used a plow on it so maybe that is were their weakness is. Not sure, but as far as lifting and holding an attachment he had no problems. It’s a neat tractor to drive and rake with. Turns tight, has been very reliable and sips fuel which is exactly what I’m looking for. I plan on running a sickle bar mower on it so the 3 pt will get tested.

![]() Got the engine pulled this afternoon. For a small engine it sure has a big flywheel and clutch. Oil was definitely in the bell housing but surprisingly the clutch was dry. Regardless, it’s going to Rick to get both clutches and a rebuild. No surprises, came out pretty easy. Will start cleaning other parts that were removed tomorrow. |

Just keep in mind, no engine rebuild is complete without going through the injection pump, injectors, new feed pump, water pump, thermostat, and all hoses. Small tractors have a big heavy flywheel so the inertia helps it get it moving without killing the engine lol!

The injection pump was just rebuilt 2 years ago, Gary told me that when I bought it. Water pump I’m not sure about. Have plenty of time to look at those things since my engine shop can’t look at it until the end of the week and then order rebuild kit. Scott has over 40 years rebuilding AC engines and has rebuilt quite a few of these little Perkins.

Good deal on the inj pump. The CAV like to leak, but otherwise are simple basic trouble free pumps.

No doubt you would be getting the pump if I have issues Ed. Water pump removal kind of stumped me as 2 nuts came loose but then began to turn. Didn’t realize until doing some research that they are flat head screws from the backing plate to disassemble the pump and had nothing to do with removal from the engine. Need to see if water pump rebuild kit is available or just get a new pump.

Also had to order a transfer pump, mechanic that removed the head at the dealer broke it, had I seen that before I left with it on my trailer he would be replacing it. Thankfully that is still available at $76.

most feed pumps like that are available from your local fuel injection pump shop we sell Delphi pumps or a couple of other brands. Perkins are tricky though, as they use a lot of different pumps for various applications. 2 bolt, 4 bolt, which way do fittings point etc. So make sure ahead of time yours is right lol! Nothing worse than opening a box to put it on as one of the last steps, only to find it's wrong lol!

Anyone have any sales literature on a 160? One of my projects after the rebuild is to see how and if I can mount my 82S mower on it. They ran these on D10,12, WD, d15,d17, and 190’s. I have mine mounted on my WD but would love to move it over on this 160. I have an excellent fabrication shop locally and intend on looking at the mount to see how I can mount it. Interestingly, there are 3 unused threaded bolt locations kinda in a triangle on the bell housing. Appears that area is meant for some type of Implement to attach to. May be a location to help support the mower mount.

Ed, picked up my lift pump at my local AGCO dealer this morning and it is the correct one. Also picked up AGCO filters while there to get ahead of the project . Anxious to get the engine to the engine builder. Having him do the rebuild since I haven’t done a Perkins before. Clutch heading to Rick next week.

Since I don’t have a sleeve puller and don’t know anything about a Perkins diesel I dropped it off to the engine builder yesterday. I pointed out the things that I had noticed wrong. He really dissected the head gasket and pointed out some things he was seeing. He looked at the block and stated the engine had been rebuilt before. He is correct as it was rebuilt 2,000 hrs ago. The sleeves appear to be deeper than they should be in the block. He said they should be flush but would verify in his book. My repair book states flush with the top of the block or no more than .0004” below the deck. He said its no wonder it blew a gasket and after questioning the previous owner this would have been the 3rd gasket. So the previous rebuild shop made a mistake by not installing the sleeves to the correct height. Hoping the internals will be still be in spec which will save me some money. He is hoping to tear it down this week so we can see if there is more damage.

Got my engine back yesterday from the engine builder. Won’t bore you with all the specifics but it got a complete rebuild. New internals, crank just needed polishing. New cam, oil pump and complete head rebuild. Rick is almost finished with my clutch rebuild so as soon as it arrives the install begins.

Could you post a picture of the rear of the engine, without the flywheel? I would like to compare the rear seal carrier to the 3.152 engines in the Massey Fergusons. Do you know what type of real main seal yours required. I guess a "rope" or rubber seal are the options. Thanks, good luck.

Slipped the engine back in today, still have hydraulic lines and steering to go back on. Was really surprised when I had the flywheel turned, that thing is heavy! At least a 100 lbs. Going back together pretty well. Getting excited to see how she runs.

Thanks Mike. Just touched up the bare block and then the rest of the engine ended up getting some paint. AGCO spray can sure sprays well. Was quite surprised it covered so well but the entire tractor will get a complete paint job this winter. Just preventing rust from appearing. Want to make sure the break in goes well and no leaks before I paint it. Didn’t get to do much today, spent the day with family which was great. Spoiling the grandkids is fun lol.

Had another project that had to get done and some parts I was waiting on, so I unfortunately haven’t been able to get back to the 160 until yesterday for a few hours. Today was going to be start up day until my afternoon went to crap. Was mounting the power steering pump which is an absolutely poor design, and the return line to the ps tank broke. Rubber hose portion of the line just broke off at the fitting. I guess 40 plus years old I shouldn’t complain but it ruined my start up plans. Hoping AGCO has one, if not, off to a hydraulic shop an hour away tomorrow.ugh
I added a AC 80 psi oil pressure gauge to the right side hydraulic line bracket. I don't care for just an idiot light and I also want to verify oil pressure before start up. Who knows how long I will have to wait for a ps line or the repair. Getting close to firing her up for the first time. |

I’ve got a 160 that I need to do the same thing to, first I was trying get a few other things fixed like a 3 point that doesn’t wanna lift, axle seals, etc. but your not lying when you say parts are hard to come by, I’ve been trying to find a front axle pivot bolt as mine was replaced by a previous owner with just a bolt

I found out AGCO dealers have access to NOS parts and can search their database. You may want to ask your parts man if he has that ability. Salvage yards are also an option, many will ship the part your looking for.
