Would anyone know approximately when the change was made from the silver Allis Chalmers emblem to the newer AC decal/emblem on 190 bar grilles? Was it about the time the four digit serial numbers ended? Thanks!

Probably around late 65 into 66 when Allis Chalmers reintroduced their selves with the new logo and Allis Chalmers Corporation etc

But then again seems all 3 bar grille tractors had that maybe 67-68 when the series 2 came out?

I have wondered here before why my Dad's 1965 190XT had the old style AC emblem in the grill and the new AC emblem in the steering wheel. My..... well now owned by a brother..... but once mine 1965 straight 190 was the same as Dad's XT.
When I get back over to my uncle's 1965 190 I'll take a look at the steering wheel. It does have the old emblem in the grill and the engine block was cast in March 1965 so it is an early 1965 model.

Thanks to all for your replies! So it appears the change was made before serial number 9004, according to Norm's book. I'm hoping to find a decent early grille to fit one of the early 190 XT's that I got from the salvage yard, both are below serial number 9004. Perhaps one will be in Hutch, unless someone has one they'd part with on here, I have a later bar grille I'd trade for one...

Bar grilles were made between 64 and 67 for the series 1 190. The triangle shape emblem was introduced in early 1966.

Thanks, Dseries4, so were any xt's that used the old style emblem, or just the straight 190's?

XT's were introduced in 65, so their first year did have the metal emblem and script.

Seems a good one isnt easy to come by so jump on it when you see it. I have the later style grill in my 66 because it was available and in decent shape and I actually prefer the look to the bar grill. Its a work tractor not for show so, thats ok isnt it?

Thanks Ed and Cal! Would anyone have an early bar grille for sale? I've zip tied the grille to the oval holes of the hood and oil cooler in the past, a pain to do for sure!

Grills, no matter if they are series one or two, three are getting hard to come by. Poor design by AC led me to change mine to 4 bolts instead of the latch that fails on a regular basis. Mine had damage when I purchased it, after much repair I decided to secure it with 4 bolts and chuck the the poor design latches. An obvious design change but at least I don't have to worry about it falling off and getting run over. I say 4 bolts but it’s actually 4 bolts into a threaded backing plate wielded to the frame of the grill. Works great and surprised AC didn’t come up with it first, too many run over by a bush hog. Very easy to remove the grill, remove 4 bolts and the grill can be removed.

Hi guys,
My tractor is a 1966 and it has the newer style logo. I am not sure about 1965 models, but I know mine has the decal.

30 years ago, I had a 65 XT that had the diamond logo on steering wheel cap, and no square plate for emblem in grill, meaning it had the metal script. I always liked the triangle logo. There was a 66 XT I was trying to get bought, it also had interchangeable front end(zipper front, or wet bolster) but we did end up trading grills, it had the triangle logo in the RH corner, and was still a bar grill. That tractor (66)couldn't be bought, as it was part of some bad dealings. Likely got junked after I moved away. I've been told my old 65 was just sitting too. Sad to see.

Both of these xt's i got out of the salvage yard are below 9004, I'd have to go look at them to get the numbers. I haven't decided what to do with them yet, haven't had the time. Perhaps 1 good one can be made out of them, or maybe part out. Thought if I could find the correct grille for them, I'd go from there. Perhaps one will be in Hutch? Thanks again to all who have replied to this post!

![]() We must have gotten the 1 good one. In the 50 years that I have been around this tractor, it has never had the grill come loose let alone fall off.

I'll bet most people do not adjust the latches tight and most don't know there are supposed to be rubber bumpers....... kinda like there are smaller rubber bumpers that a 7000 series hood tightens against. We've never lost a 7000 hood either but I observe once in a while, to see if the rubber bumpers are all there and I installed all new ones on my 7050 once.

I agree with you guys, if it stays adjusted and the rubber is in place you most likely will not have an issue. But, I had heard the horror stories before I bought mine. Neighbor lost 2 on his 185 within 3 years, 25 years ago and had to pay $450 for the second one. After seeing how hard they are to find and how expensive they are, I did the modification. Mine was missing a latch also. Just didn’t want to take a chance.
