 Topic: Planting beans

Do you prefer a stalk bean or a bush bean and why? When I was at home in the 1960's I never walked beans. I was always making hay at home, making hay for grandpa, cultivating corn, etc. Younger brothers and sister walked beans. Dad raised seed beans, one of the creameries had a seed cleaner that dad rented for 3 or 4 days. Was a good time back then working together. But I cannot remember the brand of beans or if they were bush or stalk beans. We never bagged them, dumped bushel baskets full of them in wagons or back of pickups. They usually got an extra bushel or 2 just in case a few leaked out on the way home.

You be talking about edible dry beans like pinto, red, kidney, etc? You may be living in one of the few places that raises those.
Rest of us be thinking about soybeans or green beans in the garden.

I've planted beans in 8in, 15in, 30in and 36in row width's; my favorite, that i always come back too is 30in with bushy beans!

Some grew Navy Beans in Our area. Neighbor called them Worry Beans.

at the farm all beans are bush beans. pole beans require supports I do plant pole beans in my garden. I plant in a circle and put tomato cage in the middle so they have something to climb on. at the farm pintos navies and blacks are all planted in 20" rows. all the equipment is setup for 20" and its a lot of work to change wheel widths for different crops. edible beans we cut windrow and use a edible bean harvester. soy get direct harvested with the combine. they are usually drilled with every other hole plugged.

The only beans we grow around our area are soybeans. Most are planted in either 15" or 30" rows. A few guys still use a drill with 7" or 8" spacing, but not as many as say 15 years ago.

i planted my soybeans in 30 inch rows and also drilled some, the row beans yeilded just as good if not better than the drilled and used less seed, i also planted the bush type, they combined better.

I was asking about soybeans. I only combined stalk beans. I always wondered about bush beans. BIL needs a very part time combine operator this fall. I really enjoyed running a good running combine. He's got a newer binder, I think I'm gonna volunteer to run a few dozen acres for him.
