Hey there, everyone! I finally looked into why my parking brake isn't working, and like someone had mentioned previously, it appears to just be worn components. Does anyone know where I might be able to find this entire assembly? I wasn't sure how to get a decent picture... So here's this. ![]() Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Also, any tips on removing it? I think maybe if I remove the spring I can access a bolt head or something.. But I'm not sure that's actually the process.. Any tips? Edited by Fantrum - 07 Feb 2021 at 5:22pm |

Where the shaft goes thru that square block, oil the he&& out of it. They get dry and do not work well at all. When you throw the brake latch lever all the way ahead, things should go over-center and then the left brake pedal will latch. Reverse the lever and step on the pedal to release.

Same as my 200 tractor
Replace the pawl and the three "notched plates" and you are good to go I have to replace mine about every three years Leave the bolts slightly loose so they will "self align" and then tighten them A little hard to get to but not that bad You need a owners manual and service manual!!!!!

Welcome to the forum. I'm in Missouri also, east-central. We have 2 XT's and 2 200's and each brake latch acts a little differently.

Like KY.Allis said, The arm has a pawl that bolts to the end that may be worn. The ratchet bolts to one of the brake pedals which could also be worn. It also may need lubrication as also mentioned. The one on my 190XT will stick quit often.

Thanks, I'll definitely try that! I don't have any fun projects lined up for the beastie, so I guess just improvements for now. @Ky.Allis Thanks for the tips! I greatly appreciate it! I'm honestly not sure which notched plates you're talking about (yet), but I'll investigate some more! I do have the Operator's Manual, as well as the Shop Manual, but I didn't see anything about the E-brake in the either, just normal brakes. Perhaps I'm missing something? :( @Leon B MO Thank you! Much appreciated! @Joe(TX) Thanks, I did oil it up earlier today in an effort to see if that's all it needed. I also played around with it quite a bit to watch how it functions. I can get it to lock on if I pull the lever into full-release and then pull up on the lower part connected to the spring. That's not how it's supposed to work, obviously, but it does.
Whenever I try to just make it function normally, it'll lock on but then release itself within seconds - if not immediately. I know I'm very likely wrong, but I think the spring may be my biggest issue for this problem. I guess that's part of the fun! |

Part of the problem can be the pawl the plate that locks into you teeth gets the edge wore off it. Some people flip the lever then step on the brake and I think that wears them out faster I try to step on the brake then set the lever. Anyway you can take them off and grind a new edge with a grinder, I have even made a new one. Also one more thing to check is the roll pin that holds the handle to the shaft.

The 3 notched plates are "sandwiched" together with 2 bolts. I never understood why they didn't just make 1 thick plate instead of using 3 It would make installation easier.

I'll look at it more today and try to oil it up some more. Perhaps having sat overnight now (although well below freezing) may have helped. On a side note, can anyone recommend how to actually remove this assembly? I'd love to pull it out to give it a better look as my head only fits so far under the hood, ha!

Update time!
I drowned the little devil in oil today and it is working almost 100%. It slipped out of "park" once, but only once.. I'll take a 10% chance of death, I guess! I'd still be interested in pulling it out to really clean it up, but at least I don't have to worry as much currently!

You shouldn't have to remove the assembly. There is one bolt in the end of the square arm that holds the pawl on and just 2 bolts total thru the 3 plates with teeth to remove and inspect those.

The pawl and/or ratchet teeth may be worn out causing jump out. Nothing to mess with. If it jumps out when you are climbing down the step you might get squished. Don't tighten pawl bolt fully until it is seated squarely against the ratchets. |

They do work good, but I always turn the front wheels hard one way or another- just never trust them

Thank you for that! It's definitely something I'll be doing. Today, the parking brake wanted to jump off pretty much every time.. Although I knew this would be the case with WD40 and non-stop freezing temperatures! Nonetheless, I'll order replacements as much of my land is quite hilly and it'd be nice to know my kiddos won't be getting run over, or myself for that matter. Thanks again! @DrAllis Noted, Sir! Thank you. I'd rather we all stay unlike any pancake I've ever run across. :) @DougG Yes Sir, that is definitely what I've been doing, and will continue to do even if I do replace it.
