I keep mileage records for all our well maintained vehicles. In the last 2 months (December2020/January2021), I’ve noticed a consistent 10-15% decrease in mileage using regular gasoline. Anyone else noticed a similar trend? If so, then I wonder if this drop in mileage is due to stale gas? poor quality gas?

I get the same drop every year when we switch to winter fuel. This winter I'm driving my 454 powered suburban my mileage dropped from 10 to 8. I just got my lumina van back together.

When it's cold I let my truck idle for 10 minutes(auto-remote-start default). That does reduce MPG BUT a warm engine and tranny last longer !! BTW if we got 100MPG, the gas companies would be outta business.. or gas would cost $10 / gallon...... I'm 1/2 way there this mornig.. $4.50 USD/USG..up 50c overnight....hmmmmm dang COLD here today...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

ac45dave, Thanks for sharing your auto knowledge. I went back a few years to check old mileage records & sure enough the colder months produced a few similar lower mpg.

Like many said, winter gas and here in ND we warm up cars, don't get good mileage when just idling. My car drops from 19-20 to 16-17 mpg.

Mileage on my Toyota Camry has been dropping off.
Found out yesterday why..... The front right caliper was not releasing completely. Dragging the brake. Left side pads were like new but the right side was metal on metal. New pads, rotors and calipers. Bet my mileage jumps three or four MPG.

I put a new set of General Grabber tires on my 2018 Ram 2500 and my mileage went down between 2 and 4 mpg. Then my dearly beloved reminded me we are on winter fuel and you have been using your remote starter more. I have to admit she's right! Also sitting in line idling at the bank as all you can use is drive thru!

They used to say that when they went to summer fuel it cost more to produce due the extra chemicals required. At that time it was supposed to cost $.25 per gallon. I don't ever remember the price decreasing when cold weather set in! Those chemicals must cost upward on a dollar now a days!!!

A bit off the topic, but I think related, I have been having a hard time getting fuel to not go stale in a couple weeks from putting it in a can. Having trouble with both my saws and my model plane engines, after a couple weeks it starts to make them run uneven and stall at idle, and ping at high rpm, and I only use premium in them... started about the end of may this year. If the quality isn't there then I am sure the mileage will be off...

hay amos.... possible reason... According to Dan McTeague, a noted petroleum analyst, Shell and Esso 91 are both ethanol free. All other grades from the companies have some ethanol content, but the mid-grade blend is pure gas, which means it not only corrodes less than ethanol blends, but is less likely to deteriorate when stored. The airplane fuel from Skycraft Hobbies used to be GREAT... knew the original owner years ago...

On a 300 mile trip today mine went from 20.5 measured mpg to 18.1. I'll probably take the pickup tomorrow.
