Is there a standard recommended amount of weight that goes with a given tractor size? I would think it all depends on soil types and alot of other variables. Not a one size fits all formula. My 8070 only has a thin wheel weight inside each inside wheel and fluid in inside those. It has wide spaced duals full time which are dry. It is used for tillage mostly. In wet dirt it looses traction easily. I know wet is bad but sometimes you have to. Didn't know if more weight would help or not. I have manuals but haven't looked in there to see for sure but don't remember seeing it in the past.

General rule of thumb out here is 100# total weight per hp. 60% on rear and 40% on front for fwa maybe 70% 30% for 2wd and a 4wd would be 60% front and 40% rear. So need it weighing 18,000# total but I doubt that will matter much at all in mud, tires might.

Thanks for that. I don't expect it to solve mud but it might help in extra moist conditions...maybe not.

Agree with Kansas99, 100 to 110 pounds per HP. I've got my 7045 weighing right at 15,000, seems a good balance of getting the power to the ground, not over lugging, power hops once in a while, all depending on task and conditions.

Steve, maybe this is a dumb question or I missed it, but is your 8070 FWA or 2WD? If 2wd, it will certainly be light....at least I would say so.
Just for comparative reference, to get my 7045 to weight, the rears are loaded, duals are dry, and I have 2 thick weights inside each rear, and 1000 pounds +/- on the front. I needed all of that to properly pull the 6 bottom plow I have. When I hook the rolling basket to the field cultivator, I need all of that too and will spin out on certain hills.

Yep, I would think you would want the rear end to weigh close to 13,000# and the front 5-6K. Might need weight back there, if the wheels are cast centers that would be in your favor too. If you got a scale handy I'd weigh it separate front to rear, full set of front weights would be in order too I would guess.
Problem with weight is that it's iron and expensive.

I have front weights but they make it ride worse so they are on the floor. They did help with turning especially with the wide spaced duals. Duals are axle mnt hubs/steel centers. Previous owners used it for planting. Couldn't say if it ever had more weights. I'm 3rd owner and it pulls chisel and field cult.

My 7080 with long axles, 20.8x38 p/s wheels and cast p/s dual wheels , with fluid in the inner tires, weighed over 17k. I ran it that way for one spring before changing to 18.4x38, wheels, tires so I could rowcrop. It pulled like a freight train with those 20.8's and the fluid. , Mike

Dad always said don’t put any more weight on the front than you need to keep the wheels on the ground. Saves on walking back from the field

Mine is on 18.4 radials. Firestone inside and Goodyear duals which were originally on inside when I got it with bias duals. I'm sure 20.8's would make a difference but didn't want to spend the money to get there and I side dress 28 on corn so the smaller tires help.
