Question on the rod bolts. Mid to later style are the 12 point head bolts. The early serrated caps with the hole chamfer use the hex head bolts. Reliance notes read do not use later style bolts with early rods. Well, I definitely used 12 point bolts with early rods on my latest 190xtD build. And before that when it was a pulling tractor. Rebuilding my 301 gas now and wondering what’s correct or not. Don’t want to see a rod window my freshly line bored block.
Can I use the 12 point bolts? Not sure if the hex bolts are available. How could that slight chamfer in the bolt holes affect anything? Hex bolts use a washer, and the 12 point is a shouldered bolt. Thanks for any input, Carl |

Place a new bolt in a rod cap hole. As long as it seats fully, I think you're fine. I've read that paper before and just used the new bolts anyway.

Well, I did the same years ago, put the 12 point bolts in the older rods, a 190 that is still running fine, but I had a 301 in a 545 wheel loader window a block too, ever since I always rework the rod cap like the instructions say, I have never had a problem since. Its one of them weird things, when you set the 12 point bolt in the older cap it fits perfectly, but they want the seat area to be narrower to prevent loosening. |

So, do you torque them to 45 or 50 then? Seems odd to me that a grade 12 bolt would be torqued less then an 8
