Can a bad ammeter cause a tractor to not charge? Rebuilder says generator and regulator are good. Ammeter always shows discharge. Thanks Tracy

Absolutely. An Ammeter is a flow meter. It needs current running through it in order for it to tell you something. It also feeds current to the VR. Steve@B&B

Hook up the ammeter in series with a battery (or charger) and a headlight. Bulb should be bright and show a few amps of draw on the ammeter. You can do this with either 6 or 12 volt.
Or if you have headlights on the tractor, just turn them on when the tractor is not running and look for the needle to bounce down to a small discharge. Does your needle ever move at all? And you're sure the meter isn't hooked up backwards?

also you could put a jumper wire on the amp meter and a OHM Meter on your battery and see if its charging.

I agree, trace where the ground is and clean it real good. Then take the ends off the battery and clean them real good too. I just had the same problem on a CA that was working well and then just one day...........It was the + side as that was my ground. Quick fix.
