Went to start my 45 Sat. and the starter went poof...

Pulled it and the Armature melted at 1 spot.
System is 12V ground, starter is 6v.

I see I can order a rebuild kit that has all new guts, still 6v though. I have yet to find a 12v one. I know Steve redoes these, but has anyone done it themselves? Looks like you just pull parts and replace them. Just don't want it to poof again...

As close as you are to Mt. Jackson Va. Why don't you run it over to John Brillman, www.brillman.com ; ?  he's turned lots of 6volt starters into 12volt ones for me. and could probably either have the parts on hand so you could do it you self or do a quick turn around in his shop.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

I bought one of those eBay rebuild kits and installed in me WD. It was for 6 volts and I must say it was good quality and worked perfectly.  I will caution, soldering the new tap lug is not for the novice person!

Got my starter back. Looks new with a new tag. Performs as expected.
$318 was a bit steep but it should last my lifetime.

They are a big AutoCar fan if you didn't know. They have several old semi's sitting around.
