Looking at a 1960's  version 530 Case backhoe. Its been setting 10 years, no run. Has a gas engine. He says it has a trans with HI-LO.  SAid motor ran good when parked, but there was a noise in the front transmission- engine clutch area when trans was in gear. I said maybe the throwout bearing ?  He said no.  Said it did not make noise setting still running the back hoe... going to look this weekend. Any known or common problem in this area ??

I think those had a high low lever kinda like a sherman on a ford, those should have a shuttel reverser, you clutch, and pul lever and your in reverse, or vice versa that could be the problem? It is not a shuttle clutch set up like an AC but i think was an ok design, but with 50 years of use and abuse?. To fix tractor would have to be split if that is problem

no, im in western illinois, local farmer
been parked 10 years, dont run, bucket and boom down, hydraulic steering, not power assist--- steering wheel does nothing without tractor running-- out in a field 1/4 mile from where i can get the trailer--- looking at dropping the backhoe and dragging tractor out, then possibly putting a tag axle under backhoe and pulling it out.

I have a diesel version of that Case 530 LB out in the rubble pile behind my house. It has a big hole in the block where a rod tried to escape. It is not mine, what are they worth for scrap? Just wondering.....

Neighbor has one that someone has painted up.  He putters around the yard and hardly ever moves the throttle off idle.  Drives me crazy to watch.    Wish it was mine.

I have the same exact machine, and so does one of my dads friends, the steering should still work as long as their is oil in the system. It will require some serious strength to turn the wheel but it can be done. They seem to be good machines but they leave something to be desired when it comes to the brakes and the steering, at least on all the ones I have seen.

Took the 4 x 4 truck back in the field, dropped the backhoe off onto blocks.  Raised the bucket with a floor jack and blocked the cylinder ram with a pipe. Pulled the tractor forward 50 ft with the pickup. Steering "kind of" works once you get rolling.

Pulled the tractor backward 200 ft to get to the clearing where we could put a tounge on it to take it down the hill to the trailer.
I made a hitch to bolt to the front 1 x 3 steel arms on the tractor. Knew we had to have a good hold on it and be able to guide down the hill and around to clearning.

Car trailer, two 3500 pound axles. Tires rated at 2100 pounds each. I guessed the tractor and bucket to be 6000 -6500 # . Ready for the 60 mile trip home at 55 MPH.... Arrived and unloaded, setting in the shed. Took off valve cover and drained oil. 3 valves stuck, one stem popped out when we tapped on it........  Guess its time to pull the head !

Glenn,  kids have a 1/2 ton truck axle out back. i plan to make a quick frame that clamps to the axle and will bolt to the 4 pin holes on the backhoe plate.  Have a tounge that i can adapt to the hole on backend of the bucket. I plan to hitch it up to the truck and drive it down the hill as a  two wheel trailer behind the truck... then winch it up on the car trailer  with the bucket setting on the bever tail.  I made the tractor hitch and cylinder clamps in a couple evenings. Takes some time, but i figure 4-5 hours at home saves me several hours in the field that weekend.. Probably wont go back for 2-3 weeks.. more interested in the tractor motor right now.

I believe that my service manual lists operating weight at around 7000 for tractor loader and backhoe. Good luck with it I love mine

I know of one of those that was finally retired at about 30,000 hrs. It was the main digging machine for their buisness and it was also the loader tractor on their farm. During the summer months it wasn't uncommon for that machine to run from sun up till sun down. In the 1980s it got down graded to just the loader tractor at the farm. Finally got retired in 1994. It sits in the weeds as kind of a memorial to how one machine put food on the table for three families without taking a day off.

Well, no one said i was fast !  AFter 4 months or rebuilding motor, carburetor, starter, distributor, and a dozen other repairs, i finally got it running. Blew two hoe hoses in the first 10 minutes. Took hoe back off and replaced 18 hoses. Hoe is back on and ready for field work !!

This forum is great!  I have a similar backhoe that my Uncle gave me.  Everything works great except the steering.  Driving on the road I can't go more than 2-3 mph, or the front wheels start to wobble.  With the front wheels in the air, and tractor off, I can still turn the wheels by hand.  I'm thinking the hydraulic cylinders need to be rebuilt/replaced?  Thoughts?

or is it just full of air.. took me along time tofill the lines with oil. i had a hard time purging all the oil out of the valve on the steering wheel. mine was just opposite, you cout turn the steering wheel several times and not much wheel movement-- all air.
