Yes the serial number does start with D21 but what I am wanting to know is why the serial number has 3 0's and then 3199. Again the serial number is D21 0003199.

Almost like the bellhousing was replaced at some time in the past and the s/n was re-stamped by someone who thought the three zero's was important.

Like the Dr. says, but maybe that happened right at the Factory before the new Tractor was ever shipped, and a Back-up Potable Number Stamper was used, which had 7 characters 0 to 9 and no blank digit. |

When looking at the serial number on the bell housing, You can tell that D21 and the 3 0's were stamped way before the 3199 and it was factory stamped because D21 and the 0's have paint in the indention and is evenly spaced but when looking at the 3199, it looks like it was not stamped in the factory, the number are almost on top of each other, and there isn't any paint in the indention.

Wow, thats something there! Anything else rare on this tractor, I knew a fellow who was in enginerring on these, but hes gone now, he always said differt numbers mean something

I think the Dr has it right. I have seen other tractors in the D series, with replaced bell housings, that were stamped like that. Maybe the 3 0's are a code to other dealers, that the bh has been replaced. I have also seen tractors with replaced bh's, that were not stamped, at all...

The D-21 bellhousing was unique. It only fit a D-21. The torque tube to a 180 also fit a 185 and 190 and 190XT, so no chance of pre-stamping a new torque housing. Same for a D-17 and D-19. So, this may have been a replacement housing pre-stamped...... you finish the exact s/n kind of thing.

You'd wonder why a bell housing would need replacing,but back in the day a brand new 190 xt with duals was badly bogged in a wet spot,they couldn't get in to pull it straight from the front, so they pulled it on a 45 degree or more angle with the rescue tractor. Back wheels stayed stuck and the whole front was ripped off breaking at the bell housing.

MY first thought was maybe it was a prototype's bell housing that got recycled later during production. However, after reading the comments, I would have to agree with the others that it is probably just a regular replacement part bell housing pre-stamped with the extra 0s. It sure would make sense as an easy way to distinguish an extra replacement part bell housing from an original from a factory assembled tractor. This really makes even more sense when you consider that basically from their introduction to the market, tractor pullers were building these monsters up for pulling. How long do you suppose it took for some of them to start busting bell housings????

Does the d21 bell housing fit anything else. That's what it looks like, it was replaced back when allis was still in business and a dealer did the stamping.

The dealership I worked at told me they got a new 220 in once that had a pinhole in the rear end housing. A casting flaw right from the factory and the factory sent out a new rear housing to replace it.

Upon further investigation the seam between bellhousing and transmission has not been broken. Paint is still over seam and bolt heads.

It does look like at least some of the numbers are double stamped, but it looks like over the same number. I have seen that before too, as if they though they were too shallow and re-stamped them again. I've even seen one where a single digit was upside down, and then they re-stamped it the right way.
I can't explain the 0's, but I'd look it over and compare casting numbers and markings with other models to see if there's other unique things.

I would like to see the rest of the tractor also if you have some images. Thanks. Looks possible re-stamp also because looks a little off and last 4 numbers to me are deeper and darker. Just my 2 cemts. Thanks Darryl

Now I may not have the greatest color discernation (is that a word?) but to me that orange looks a little pink which makes me think it's not factory original paint. Cheap paint fades to pink and I have never witnessed that with an original paint Allis tractor....... other than the cabs on the 8000 series for some reason.

After another inspection the only difference between this tractor and the others is the brake cover plate. This one has a flat face and the others have a ribbed face. All casting numbers are the same. Any ideas? Thanks,

Could it be one of the legendary 10 that Norm told us about that got a FWA? Would these rare 10 be in need a different tube? He told us that 9 of the 10 were taken back to the factory and had the FWA taken out and replaced with the standard front end.
