I am going on a tractor ride. Will I be able to keep up with red and green? What is the theoretical top speed of my D-12 III with over/under and 14.9/24 rear tires?

I don't know if this helps or not, but on my CA with 12.4 X 24 in 4th gear using my GPS in pedestrian mode it shows 16 mph. Could be comparing apples to oranges but it may help you.And I'm not sure of the accuracy of a GPS on pedestrian mode,, I do know it is as fast as I want to go on it.

You're looking at 15.0 MPH @ 2,000 RPM with a 12.4 x 24 rear tire. No, you cannot keep up to a legit M or Super M Farmall. If you increase your engine speed to 2,200 RPM, then road gear is 16.5 MPH. Now you can keep up with some M's.

All rides I have been on they have a speed limit, anything from 10 to 15 mph, I think it is not a race, its for enjoying the ride.

I go on several each Summer and 14 MPH seems to suit me the best. Don't have to run full throttle, but fast enough to cover some miles. The 10 MPH thing is sooo bad, I won't go on one anymore.

I have a D-10 series III with the Hi/Lo gear box in front of the standard 4 speed transmission. I drive it on tractor drives/caravans, It will 16-1/4 mph.

The HI/LOW gearbox does nothing for the top speed, as it is direct drive when in HI. A regular 4 speed has the same top speed. Rear tire diameter and maximum engine RPM dictate how fast it will go.

Thanks Doc. I just learned something. I had always figured that the Range Transmission ( two speed gear box was a straight/over gear box.

I've had my D10III w/ range in one ride-my last ride! If I get talked into one again the tractor will be on the trailer and ride in the cab. The variations in tractor speeds over the years for the different models won't allow uniform speed. highly unlikely you'll ever go top speed unless you stop at a roadside park, take a nap and want to catchup.

I know the guy who leads the two local rides I go on, he has some Allis and knows how slow they can be so he usually puts me near the front to set the pace. Any smart tractor ride will either split into groups or put the slow tractors up front and just go their speed.
