So I'm starting to consider rebuilding the generator. I've lived with it not working (tried re-polarizing, etc) but it's starting to bug me more. What's the best way to deal with the power steering pump? Do you just unbolt it from the back and leave it in place, or so you have to remove it's lines, plug them, and take it off with the generator? |

Just unbolt the PS pump from the back. There is a splined coupling that drives the pump.

That's what I'd hoped, so there's enough give in the hardlines to get it off?

Yes, there is enough room to remove the generator without disconnecting the P/S pump hoses. There's even enough room to do it with the Chevy generator. You'll want to loosen the clamp on the inlet hose to the pump, but it can be done.
Also, that 57 Chevy generator will fit just fine. It's about an inch longer so you need a spacer for the rear bolt. If your original armature dies like mine did, the 57 Chevy generators are a lot easier to find.

Not sure what's wrong with mine, I found a good guide to testing generators, but I suspect even if it's just a new set of brushes, I need to take it off the tractor to service.
