Did A/C ever "dabble" in the skid steer market?

I don’t think so. They made quite a few things that people don’t realize but I don’t think skid loader were one of them.

I remember the local A/C dealer selling Owatonna's. I believe they were one of the first to market a skid steer

Not quite. They had some smaller fwd loaders that were decent, but nothing like the Bob cats made in the Dakota's.

Was it Clark or Melroe that started Bobcat ?? Dad used to have a 444 Bobcat but don't recall the other part of the name ? Seems like I've seen a picture of the first B/C and it was a 3 wheeled machine that had a single "caster" rear wheel.

read about it..... a turkey farmer by the name of Eddie Velo made the first 3-wheeler with independently controlled drive wheels.

The 440 was the first 4-wheel Melroe Bobcat. The 444 was next; I have one. Onan Super CCK engine, 15-16 HP.

Few of the major farm tractor manufacturers actually manufactured their own skid-steers... most of them, if sold under a company's colors, were re-branded versions of companies that specialized. My skid-steer is branded as the IH 4130, it's actually a Hydra-Mac 8C... and it was also sold by Gehl... and I think probably under 5 or 6 other companies' brands. I don't know if Melroe/Bobcat was 'badge-engineered' for others, but I DO know that many farm dealerships weren't afraid to have either Bobcat or Hydra-Mac signs on their posts out front. From a business perspective, the badge-engineering effort was a toss-up. Tractor manufacturers could try to make their own skid-steers, but the patent licensing was a really tough gauntlet to run. The sensible path for most was to simply either steer clear of the business (by letting dealerships pick up an appropriate line card and stay OUT of the skid-steer aspect), or to enter into a brand-engineering agreement with a manufacturer. My 4130, by the way, had the Hydra-Mac 8C's Achilles heel... the Onan NHCV... a fine engine, if it wasn't sitting in the belly of a steel bucket full of acorns and leaves, grass and mud, sucking in debris, and being home to field mice. It is getting a Kubota 3cyl diesel...

gee I've used my D-14 as a 'skidsteer'. Lifted a 3000# log on the carry all, front end got, ok a tad 'light', used the brakes to steer down the fields, onto the road and home..... To me a 'skidsteer' is any device that ain't got a steering wheel to control direction.... so I consider tanks, dozers, miniexc, etc to be in the 'skidsteer' catagory
