For many years we had a 3 acre patch where we raised organic sweet corn. Did that for 2 or 3 years then I would seed it to alalfa/clover mix. Then back to sweet corn. Then she got started with honey bees. So We replaced the west line fence and seeded Dutch white clover and pollinator seed around the outside of the patch. 3 years ago I plowed this patch up, leaving about a 6' strip around the patch. Then seeded Pioneer alalafa. It did not grow well. But I have a great crop of Dutch white clover all over the patch. I'm thinking the Dutch white had crowded out the majority of the alalafa. Used to get 10-15 medium sized big bales off this patch. Got 3 this first cutting. I do have a lot of Dutch white in the yard, It might get a shot of 24d this fall. Has anybody heard of Dutch white being toxic to alalafa,? Thanks guys

Dutch white clover is toxic to almost everything given a chance itll push out even weeds. I had a large patch of weeds when i bought this place i mowed around the small white clover patches in one year it crouded out every thing else.some grasses survived but every thing else was gone.a couple years later I kept mowing it weekly before it could seed.2-4D wont kill it

24D will give clover a hard time, but will not kill it......... You need something that has 2-3% of DICAMBA (sp?) in it.... I buy these 40 oz bottles at Menards that has about 7% 24D and 2% DICAMBA in it... Kills everything but the grass. Takes about 2 -3 oz per gallon.

It is also toxic to ruminants if it gets moldy. The active ingredient in coumadin is extracted from sweet clover

Yep shameless it is. We had sheep for 10 years. Nobody around here to sheer them now. I try'd it one time when I was 15 or 16. Dang old ewe was skinned up pretty good. Ain't gonna do no more. Ain't gonna milk another cow either.

the dude that rents one of our houses raises sheep, and he does shearing too, has a semi trailer he puts the wool into, when it's full he ships it out somewhere.

Your Wife's honey bees will work the clover and in my area there is a good stand of White Dutch clover everywhere this year. Here in my area I am not having good luck with alfalfa as I did years ago, after 3 years and the stand is pretty thin.
