Topic: 3 pt planter ?Posted: 17 May 2020 at 1:44am |

I recently bought a AC 3 pt 2 row corn planter that seemed to be in nice shape and was excited to plant with it on Friday.Hooked it up to my D15 and as soon as I started planting the fertilizer plugged up on both sides down by the fertilizer divider.Thought I was planting to deep but no matter what depth I had it at it still plugged.Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are the disc openers for the fertilizer worn out?? letting dirt get in between the discs ?? they can't be rusty and must be free to turn.

The AC planter we had, many years ago, would plug up in damp ground if we were stopped when we set it down. The damp soil would push up into the tube and stick there (especially clay ground). If we were moving forward when we set it down, it was much better (still plugged occasionally).

The frame and planter units must be "level" when in the planting position. Adjust top link on the hitch to get level.

When you start to drop the planter to plant always be moving forward and always raise the planter while still moving forward letting the planter go backwards the least bit while its sitting on the ground will stop up everything a lot of times. When I used to use one of those planters I didn't use the metal tubes used rubber hoses and let the fertilizer fall thru the tubes on top the ground then I was able to see if the fertilizer was feeding right or not. Also left the tops off the seed boxes to watch to make sure the corn was going out of the boxes.

Also fertilizer these days is a whole different thing than those planters were designed for used to be a lot coarser.I'd think about mixing the fertilizer with some pelletized lime to use in the fertilizer hoppers. And do not travel with the tractor after you add fertilizer it'll pack up in the hopper every time if you do that.

Years ago I had a 2 row corn planter, different make, I found that the runners/shoes/or what you call them, wear down and need rebuilding, perhaps that would fix your problem.

I got some NOS planter parts for a neighbor from Paul Barnsley (PaulB on the forum) a couple years ago. He might be able to help you out.
