just brought a d17 series lll and want to change transmission and rear end oil. I see a drain plug under the differential, and a smaller plug between it and the right brake housing. What is this smaller plug, do I drain both? Thanks, Andy

Get yourself an owner's manual.  It will show you which plugs to remove and the capacities of the reservoirs.  They can be found cheap on e-bay and are full of valuable information.  Can't think of the small plugs you are referring to, but don't touch them.

When you do drain the rear end oil, be SURE to have TWO (2)  empty 5 gallon buckets handy ! If your D17 is like my D14 was, there'll be more than 5 gallons of oil in the diff...
..seems adding a quart of oil to the hydraulic system to get lift to raise , month after month ,year after year, kinda adds up.......
there's NO way a 5 gallon bucket can hold 7 gallons of oil ......Cry

Jay, guessing you must have found this out the hard way...according to my owners manual, my D17 rear end holds 24 quarts, that's 6 gallons, but my shop manual for the same tractor says it holds 28 quarts, that's 7 gallons...so based on your experience, I'm gonna have 3 buckets handy...Thanks, Andy

yeah... that was a FUN way to start the day......
I let the plug drop into the bucket......saves the panic wondering WHEN does it get out of the hole....
