My mower, Jacobsen 445G turfcat, has a failed digital governor control on it. Made by Barber-Colman, now out of business. Jacobsen doesn't offer it anymore. Can't find one in a boneyard. Throttle by wire. Has a 4 cylinder in line gas 28 hp engine in it. Engine and mower have about 600 hours total. Is there anyone familiar with the Ford Industrial engines with this type governor control. The governor manufacturers are of little to no help. Hard to believe the three largest governor makers were all in the same town in Illinois. Need help bad on this. Thanks Tracy

Tracy, im no expert on the subject, but did some of this years ago... You have a input from the motor, to the box... you set some parameters, then you get an output back to the motor.. Im not sure it has to be a "special" box for that motor.. It just has to have the correct output signals........... I looked on AMAZON and there are a dozen companies that make " electronic governors" for small motors... I would contact one of these guys to additional info..  Dont think it matters if it is one cylinder or 4 cylinder.. You get a PULSE from one cylinder every rotation...

Steve, I will look into them. I have found a company that thinks they have one that will work. It is for a linear actuator, mine has a rotary actuator. You would think some of these guys would know for sure. One company has one but it only will have low idle, high idle and two discreet speeds. No one has one that will actually govern at any speed between low and high idle. I been working on this for a month now. Thanks Tracy

You might be able to go back to an older mechanical governor, from an older ford engine, of the same displacement, the motors, themselves didn't change much, if its the same series of motors, as were used in ford tractors...Wink

Find the CID of the engine, in question, and then cross it over ...Wink

Tracy. "MOST" of the governors are made for Generator sets, thats why it has high idle and low idle... Not too many gen sets need to run at half speed........ I would think there were a couple of the governors that had more than 2 set points... Even 3-4 would be nice... dont have to be variable / multi..

Dave, this is a distributorless engine. I had thought of a belt driven governor, but it still has to get the spark for ignition. Wasn't sure how to get it. Tracy

Steve, I really wanted an infinite speed instead of having just 3 or 4 speeds. I wish someone offered to infinite speed with the drive by wire. Thanks Tracy

Spent most of the day looking for a replacement. No luck. Most manufactures don't even bother with customer service. You wood think someone would have the knowledge to modify or build one new. It being on a Ford industrial engine, they made thousands of.  Tracy

Does the EI go into where the distributor would be?  If so, swapping back to a distributer may still be possible...Hug

Dave, not sure about that. I did look it over pretty good about adding a mechanical governor. Not sure there is room. I would of thought that it would have been an option on this engine. They were used in skid steers, floor sweepers and lift trucks. Tracy

Would need as many 'part numbers' as you can post...electronic guvs are very simple to build and program once 'the specs' are known. About $20 worth of parts 'under the hood' and about 40 lines of code.

A thought occurs to me... Since this is a 29 hp motor, it is also used in some other compact equipment.  There is a guy in shippensburg, PA who specializes in compact equipment, maybe he can steer you to a boneyard, that might have what you're looking for..
