 Topic: D19 rear lockup

Hi all, I'm having a problem with my D19, when sitting in the seat it's the right rear wheel that won't turn. I was doing some loader work with it when started to hear clicking noise from the rear end. I was able to get it back to the barn before the wheel total lock up.
1. I changed both axles hydraulic fluid (no metal was found -The wheel that's turns the fluid was brown in color. 2.Looking for possible solutions to my problem and also if there's a mechanic nearby Greencastle, IN
I just bought this last summer really started liking this old tractor:(

Yup. D19 uses band actuated disc brakes and they are touchy.......

If the ramps the balls roll on are worn they like to hang up causing lock up.

Thanks for the diagram! I pulled the cover and inspect the brake shoes and apply the brake and it looks to be functioning as it should. I think the next step is to jack up the rear end and watch the brake assy in action.. any thoughts on approach? looks like i will be pulling off the tire :(

Pull the brake drum out and drive the tractor to be sure you don't have an internal problem. Leave cover plate and fender off for this testing.

I can't read the numbers in the picture but the drum assembly that goes inside the drake band has 3 balls in it. Don't remember if they are 3/4 or 7/8 diameter. When you step on the peddle you contract the band against the drum the balls roll up grooves that are tapered like a ramp to push the drum out against the brake disk.

The balls are between the drum (item 3) and plate (item 4). They are held together by 4 springs (item 2). If the linings on the plate and drum are too thin, the brake will lock. You can usually unlock them by backing up.

Four balls per side. Two drum return springs per side. D-19's were the worst for this hanging up problem, New disc lining, clean balls and pockets with some grease or anti-sieze helps. New return springs are a must. Machining off the cover so it doesn't allow the drum to expand so far is best, if you can find someone to do that. You can get as tight as .030" running distance between the disc lining and the wear surface and it will be fine. Book spec is .045" minimum.

Dr I need to work on my !90, I took the drum out because I was having trouble. Partially because last time the linings wore off and the balls jumped out of the sockets and ruined the edges. I have a line on a drum and hub. How Would you get that inside dimension measured?

Without getting fancy, drill a 1/4" hole in the cover where it would be aligned with disc lining. Thread the hole for 1/4" NC bolt. With the drum pushed clear back in the cavity, gently thread in the bolt until you touch the lining. Remove and measure the bolts protrusion with a feeler gauge. Machine cover O.D. from that information.

Thanks again all I appreciate all the help. Well yesterday I took the cover off and Sprayed a couple cans of brake cleaner into the brake assembly and inspected everything everything and all looked to be intact. So I decided that instead of pulling the brake I put it back together and see how it functioned. I left the linkage to the break disconnected for that wheel. I ran it for about three hours yesterday without incident. Now I didn't decrease anything in the brake assembly.I spray cleaner and cleaned out a lot of the mechanisms. This is probably a short term fix,before I need to rebuild them. I had a gentleman private message me on offering that service.I'm going to connect the brake backup today and see if the problem comes back.

That's the first thing to do is clean the dirt out first - usually helps a lot and sometimes - fixes- them

Hi all, update I connected the break linkage backup to the rear will been using it without incident keeping my fingers crossed.
I have one other question the clutch on this releases all the way at the top of the paddle is there an adjustment for the the clutch. Trying to gauge how much life is left in it.

Adjustment is done thru the 3 inch hole in bottom of bellhousing. Small place to work.
