So I shipped out a good used unstyled WC radiator to a customer in Pennsylvania last week. He paid $300 + shipping. Get a call today from him and he says he was surprised to open the box to find a used radiator inside! Told me he was expecting a NOS radiator! I said this was a good used one that he called about! He said no, I wanted NOS. I told him why didn't he say that before I shipped the danged thing way over to him!!!! The guy is hard of hearing so apparently he didn't understand when I offered to send him pictures of it, so he could look it over and approve it. And the kicker is the day before I shipped it to him in PA, I had a local guy call about the same unstyled radiator and was going to drive over and buy it that very day, but I told the local guy I had promised it to this guy so I had to turn him away!
I told him I would pay to have it sent back and refund him the $300 plus shipping he paid. Jeez, ya stand by your word only to have the circumstances work against you! Man this really pisses me off and makes me want to not ship parts out to customers! Sorry for the rant, had to get it off my chest and hopefully none of you guys go through the same thing

You did the right thing.  Take pride in that.  I don't have a business, but have at times parted out tractors.  I always send pictures first, just saves a lot of headaches.

you did all you could when you offered to send pictures. I'd say it was his mis-understanding, if he is so hard of hearing that he didn't understand what you were selling. You're standing behind your parts by offering to take it back when he wasn't satisfied. Do as I do, keep a list of the few problem people you encounter, to remind you at a later date that they are a PIA.

Does anyone realistically think they could buy a NOS unstyled radiator for $300?

For every one bad apple, you can have 50 or more satisfied customers.  Focus on those customers and forget about those who give you flack.  By the way, I received the D14 power director clutch hub today that you sent me - looks very good!  Many thanks for your service!

Thanks guys. I had a few things go bad today and then this happened. I should have repeated myself when I offered to send him pictures but I was tired of repeating myself so he could understand me. I hope he realizes that I would not KNOWINGLY send him a part he didn't want, especially since he knew I turned a local guy away to sell it to him. Just a bad coincidence that all these things aligned to have this outcome. The lesson I learn from this is from now on I will be repeating twice that "X" part is New, Used or NOS, just to make sure it is clear.

Yes I did wonder if he actually thought $300 would buy him a NOS radiator, but chose not to say it to him. And sorry if I offended anyone by this post.

Well, at least he was just a wee bit shatterpaited and not a crook. I've dealt with crooks... too bad there's no such thing as a "Crook-O-Meter" that we can use. Nearest thing I can think of is eBay's rating system. Still flawed, but it can help me in deciding which seller to choose. Glad your character chooses the high road!
I need more than 200 characters for my "signature." I'd love to see that changed to 250!

sad part is, he probably thought he was gonna skin a fat hog, and simply re-sell it to make money! Some people just aren't worth dealing with. I've been very fortunate to have built up a great customer base, many from this and a couple other forums. Looks like you've just started a new policy, you will send pics to review the product, if the person doesn't have internet, or smart phone, find someone who does, they are everywhere. Sorry to hear this!

Alex,

Sorry to hear about the double whammy. Its bad enough to have to eat the freight but to miss out on the local sale bites. Might you be able to contact the local customer who wanted it? I am in sales also and this kind of stuff happens from time to time. It used to keep me up at night til I got enough years on me to be able deal with these situations better. I can recall some of the bad deals from years ago but now they are more like stories I tell friends for entertainment..

No good deed goes unpunished. Deal with the public enough and something like this happens. I think I would have made him eat the freight his way but that’s splitting hairs. That way each of you has half the freight. Most people are good and honest but every so often someone comes along that tests your patience. Keep doing what you do well and don’t lose sleep over the dirt bags.

Seems everything has to be shipped. When folks find me and discover many things they paid big on line, I have on the shelf. I still enjoy the pick it off the shelf and look at it before I buy. No surprise at check out time.

I like PaulB's idea Alex.  Keep a register of who is a good customer and ones that are a PITA ones.  I just hope like heck that I'm not in Pauls' little black book on the bad side.  LOL  That really sucks that you have to eat the shipping.

I guess you might have learned a good lesson, on that I learned many years ago.  When dealing with someone who is really hard of hearing, I now ask that someone else talk to me on the phone and relay to that person.  It might seem petty, but it saves a lot in the end.

Now you just have to ask everyone for an extra $ to help defray the cost.  ROFLMAO!!
Later Buddy!!
