What would/could be the #1 reason for a gathering to to jump off of the sprockets? There is only 1 "problem child" on the head giving issues this late season. How you guys keep track of 12/14 row heads baffles my mind

Bad bearing in front sprocket, front sprocket plate loose, or loose bearing in rear bearing housing. MACK

Just looked on the parts book site, the rear housing bearing replacement does not look like fun at all

I had a black head doing the same as you describe. It turned out to be the slide bar in the grove that the front sprocket assembly slid in to keep the chain tight was worn so thin it let it twist. Took me about 30 acres to figure it out. it drove me nuts!
Oh, and the wide heads (12/16 row) are just as much fun, but oh man is it nice to sit and watch them work when they are set up right!

Amos,do you recall the "fix"? Was it just a matter of shims or major re-building of the row ?

I just replaced the slide bar that was bolted on, I think it is 3/8 by 3/4 flat steel, Mine was worn down to 1/2 inch wide.

I think that piece is hardened steel so making one from mild steel wouldn't last long.

Mine made it 1000 acres, the rest of the head was finished then. I can't figure out why just the one row gave trouble and the others didn't.
