We were trying to move our 38 B today by hand (crank start but not today for some reason) and when turning the steering we heard a snap and then the wheel just spins. I pulled it and it looks like there should be a woodruff key locking the wheel to the shaft. Not sure where it went but it's gone. Anyone know of a source for a new one or have a schematic of the steering wheel area? Any help would be appreciated.

If you talking about the steering wheel spinning it has a half round key.

My B did the same thing a couple years ago. It was the little stud on the "lever shaft" that rides in the worm gear. If yours is a 1938, it'll only have one stud, not 2 like in the picture above.

If the nut holding the Steering Wheel on is tight, I doubt if it is the key. Watch the nut and the end of the shaft and see if they turn with the wheel. Gary |

Just proves what I have always said; A lot of the problem is the nut behind the steering wheel !

I just remembered buying a B with a ross steering box cover broke letting the shaft move the pall away from the worm. Something else to look for!

That pall will actually snap right off sometimes as well or wear out if someone put grease in the box instead of oil. I went through 4 boxes to build 1 good one for my B.

Engine doesn't turn, AND steering is stuck? Pull it into the shop, let it warm up for a day, then try it. If they turn... drain the water out...
