Just casually looking for another tractor. Have a 7040 p.d now and had another 7040 last year I sold. So wanting a second tractor to run with the 7040. I'd use the 7040 for tillage etc and the heavy work.
Found a 7020 P.S I'm going to take a look at Probably run the 7020 on the light jobs like planting (only 4 row) and drilling beans spraying etc. But The 7020 should be able to pull my 21 massey disc? and a 5 furrow Ih plow pretty well right?
I haul my grain in gravity wagons, 500-550 bushels a trip, have some hills. How would the 7020 with the power shift handle it? Be handy to be able to shift easily vs the power director but the 7020 having the 649I will be short on cubes.
Just wondering overall what everyone thinks of a 7020, this one has 7700 hours. WAs it under powered with the 301? I'd think it would work great for the lighter jobs and maybe save a bit of fuel?

Used to have a 7020. At 1500 rpm and under there was no power and the smoke looked like an oil well fire. Over 1500 it had a lot of power. I think lots of tractors are that way anymore. My son's john deere 6430 behaves the same way only it doesn't smoke.

Sounds like either the injection pump is turned up too high, bad injectors or you have a turbo problem

You will like a 7020 power shift if everything is right. The transmission allows the RPM's to be where the turbo is spooled up. It will be perfect for the way you want to use it. Keep the weight at 12,000 lbs or less ( no fluid), which is 100 lbs per PTO HP. Remember, it is a tractor that is 40 yrs old. Lots could be wrong with it.

I have an 8010 basically same tractor. I love it for spreading fertilizer brush hogging baling and planting. Some say it’s under powered but with the power shift just drop another gear. I think it’s a really nice big frame tractor with a smaller engine. It’s really fuel efficient compared to a 426. I love mine. Good luck

The 6430 is a very smooth running tractor for a four cylinder, and a handy loader tractor. Of course, it is a much newer tractor too, and also a front wheel assist. Front wheel assist is wonderful on a loader tractor.

We have a 6420 MFWD and like you said, excellent loader tractor. I really the shuttle shift for loading bales.

We have a PD 7020 and a ps 8010, like them both. If you use it like any other 110 hp tractor, you'll be fine. If your 7040 PD handles the gravity wagons ok, the ps 7020 will too.

My 7020 is a PD, but still one of the most used tractors I have. Feels like more tractor than 120hp.

Have had two of them first was a pd 20 speed, taking off with a loaded wagon was not ideal but a good reliable tractor. Traded it in the 80s when deere was offering two times the value or any tractor that wasn't green. Second one came years later when I needed a cab planter tractor it had ps and we loved it very gutsy and snappy. Sold it to buy an 8030 with mfwa. Can't go wrong with the ps great transmission.
