Well,,I just got back home from hospital,,,,as the wife had a setback and dang near lost her this morning. She had finally agreed to go see a diabetic specialist two weeks and after some testing, he changed her insulin from the Levemir pens to the 75/25 pens and had been doing Ok til this morning. When I checked her blood bout 9 Am, she had a 160 which for her is bout average. Like the Dr ordered, I gave her 10 units of the insulin and she ate bout 1/2 of one of those small pies you get at Walmart with some milk. She fell asleep like she always does and I got dressed and went outside to get on with my projects. I usually go check on her a couple of hours later and she was OK. At noon the nurse from Home Health showed up,,and I kinda brow beat her as she was suppossed to be there at 2 PM. I told her wife was still asleep and it would take me bout 30 mins to get her ready,,is why I wanted them to be more punctual,,,,, Nurse says since I'm already here I'll just wait,,,and it was a dang good thing she did as the wife had somehow had a reaction to the insulin and she was foaming at the mouth, incoherrant and very, very pale. We checked her blood and she had a 38,,,,CHIT,,I got her some orange juice while nurse called 911,,,checked her blood after 8 mins and it was now 102. Gave her a bit more orange juice, Waited 8 more mins and it had gone back down to 38!! EMTS finally get there and started giving her a big dose of something and then loaded her up going to ER. CLOSE ONE,,,,!!!! AND,,it was raining like a crazy man and they all got soaking wet from house to Ambulance,,,,,,, I just got back home and they finally had got her blood glucose under control and she was sleeping. Dr says she has some fluid in lower part of left lung and a UTI too. They are treating her for pneumonia. I'm going to bed, I'm so danged tired,,,,,, |

DJ, Sorry to hear about the set back... Just remember that a UTI infection can kill a person fast too... Does not help being a diabetic. I do hope the doc's will resolve this and gets a real handle on what happened so she doesn't gives you another scare again. And like a certain someone said , "I wanna see you 2 together for a long time to come!... " I too hope you two will have a long time together yet. ... And Tell her we are all hoping that she gets better so she can get out of that horsepital. An Shameless, you are not going to probe her with yur sharpie either... or I'll have my real dam sharp 3 tine hay furk right behind you.... and don't furget that... that things so wicked I don't even tease you abouts use'n it on you when ye are busy torment'n us with your dam blasted snow machine. But now that your aware of it, mmm... .... .... ... ...

Did the Dr say anything about the UTI possibly being part of the reason for the rapid change? I've was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10 and I've noticed over the years when I had something else going on it would sometimes cause my sugar to spike then drop

Joe, sorry to hear about the setback with the blood sugar. Just remember, the Lord is good! He sent the nurse there early. Prayed for you and Joyce this morning that He would give her speedy healing and strengthen you. If the doctors get the UTI cleared up quickly that will help a lot. The medics probably gave her a bolus of D50, puts dextrose (sugar) directly into the bloodstream. I have seen that stuff bring patients around in 5 minutes even when they were non responsive.

What a tough road your on Joe. Been on that path when my wife kids and I had to look out for my dad. Did to many trips to the hospital. When we were to poke his finger 2 or 3 times a day and check sugar level that was the end. Cause I could not get a test drop without a major fuss. Then the nurse tried to show use how and she did worse.Thankfully now you don't need that drop of blood but still a big challenge to doctor a loved one.
In my opinion anybody that can doctor the family has to be extra talented. We made it some years after the professionals said it was time let somebody else do it. We got real luck and with a doctor specializing in old people that leveled out all the medicine he needed and could understand all the stuff from his heart doctor. With everything working he was happier than I ever thought possible. Became a real social butterfly at the home the short time he was there. So you will be in my prayers as well as your wife.

Back in high school I got up one morning and felt funny and could not speak no matter how hard I tried nothing would come out. Mom and dad rushed me to the ER where they checked my blood sugar and it was in the 30's. I remember my doctor using a syringe full of glucose that looked like it was the size of a baseball bat and a needle the size of a #2 pencil to injection it in my arm. Was fine a hour later and they kept me overnight to be safe. This was back before glucose meters were invented. Today I probably check mine a dozen times a day and if I wake up at night that is the first thing I do. One thing is for sure as I have gotten older it is harder to tell when it is low so I keep a close watch on it.
I will praying for you Joe and your wife. God bless. |

I went up there this mornin and she told me quite clearly ,,,,,,,that she is ready to come home,,,so that means she is doing better,,,, Didn't catch the Dr but her nurse says she slept all night and is doing better. They are watching that UTI as she gets that all the time and has been the start of her infection issues,,AND,,is what started the whole issue that led to her foot amputation, so they are watching that close. Again,,Many Thanks for the prayers,,,!!

Prayers are headed your way every day for the both of you Joe. They have been since,,,,,,,this first started.
YOU get some rest and have a cold one and prop your feet up and just relax for a bit. There's NOTHING that needs to get done except for you and Momma to get some well deserved rest and relaxation. Hope her sugar gets straightened out and that UTI gets taken care of. My next younger sister suffered with that for a long time. She got it straightened out with something in her diet. God Bless and watch over you two. |

The stress of providing care for someone that is that ill can wear you out. You may to need to take a break from time to time. But then if something bad happens you feel guilty for not being there. A very good friend of mine lost his wife this from complications from diabetes. Thankfully he has good help from his family, but it's still very hard. Reading the Bible and prayer always is a good help. Leon

Joe, I hope you can continue to be such a great caregiver. You may not realize just how important you are to Mrs. Joe, and for that matter, for all your forum friends. There is nothing wrong with asking for help when you are just near the end of your rope. Take care of yourself my friend. Oh and don't worry too much about Shameless and his poking stick, his bark is worse then his bite (or stick in this case).

Well,,,to all my dear Friends,,,We brought Mom home from the hospital this afternoon,,,,She had threatened to rip all them tube out and just come on home,,,altho,,,nobody dared get close enough to her to tell her she only gots one leg and,,,,and,,I had the wheel chair in the car,,,,, Anyway,,they did the fluid draining,,in her room,,and that was something to watch. I didn't really want to watch cause them big ole needles bother me some,,,,, I just barely get by with the 5/16" insulin needles as it is,,, There is a specialist that does the procedure and they had a machine that can see the fluid in her lung and that nurse directs him to location and he sticks this needle bout 8" long and there is a vacuum in the receiver bottle plus the pressure in her lung that pushes the fluid out thru a little hose. They drained a little over one quart of nasty lookin fluid plus a little blood,,,UGhhhhh Anyway she is resting now about to fall asleep,,,dang ,,I;m glad that one is over with. I don't know how I can ever repay all your prayers and well wishes,,,they mean so mush to us,,,

Desert Joe. Been praying for you and Joyce since day one. So good to hear there is some improvement and that she is now home. Noting like her own bed in her own house to boost the spirits and help with the healing. God is still a miracle worker and His will be done in both you and Joyce. God Bless.

Hey Good Buddy,,,it good to hear from youse,,,,,well,,,the latest may be bad,,,but,,,but,,,it "might" be good too,,,,most of the time I ain't got a good idea where we at,,,,, It seems her PCP had been noticing her kidney function had been steadily going up (numericaly) which means the higher the number the worst it is. And she told us the wife should go see a kidney specialist asap. They scheduled an appointment for this past Monday in Roswell and the Renal Specialist told us she is at a 5.4 which is just one small step before requiring Dialasis. It is going to take a huge effort from the wife with her diet from now on,,, to even have a chance in heading this off,,but knowing my wife,,,,,well,,,?? I took her to the local hospital where they did an ultrasound and results go to the Renal Specialist who will let us know later this week. Sure needin a magic wand long bout now.
