For several months the '99 F150 has had the check engine light coming on and showing mostly PO171/174 codes (lean condition on bank 1/2) along with a few other codes, reset and in just a few miles or maybe a hundred the light comes back on. While changing out the water pump, which was successful by the way, just for grins I disconnected most of the electrical connecters under the hood and put a dab of dielectric grease on them, been almost a week and no more check engine light, knock on wood (tapping on head). May be just dumb luck but thought I would post it on here in case someone else has that problem.

Interesting ! I've seen them numbers before... I just 'reset' the computer. Years ago I replaced the MAS ( Mass Airflow sensor) and whatever code had come up magically has never come back. I found out Ford uses DIFFERENT sensors for 6es vs v8s !!! idiots.... oh well... thanks for the info !! Jay

Earlier this year my son bought a 2007 F150 with the 4.6 V8. Suggested an oil/oil filter and air filter change as we didn't know the last time it was done. 2 oil filters listed that will fit. If the engine was built in Windsor Canada it took the filter with standard threads, if it was built in Romeo MI in the USA it took the filter with metric threads. Luckily the filters are a different shape/size so I could measure the filter to see what we needed. You would think by the early 2000s Ford would have standardized something like this but then I remembered they made a 427, 428. and a 429 engine and 3 351s, a 351C, a 351W, and the 351M.

p0174 LEAN code can also be due to excess air (LEAN)....... on a 20 year old motor, you should check the vacuum lines for cracks / excess heat dry out/ brittle ........... pull them off one at a time and look............ on the FORD 5.4 V8, a good place to look is above the drivers valve cover toward the rear, there are two small hoses about 8 inches long and 1/4 inch ID that are connected to the EGR system... right by the exhaust manifold.

P0171 P0174 lean codes generally mean you have a vacuum leak. Dirty MAF sensor will bring up the same code. Plugged fuel filter will do it and a weak fuel pump. The PCV hose/line where it connects to the intake around the throttle body usually rots out from crankcase gases. Steve (ill) is talking about the DPFE sensor I believe. The hoses connect to the exhaust manifold and measures EGR function. The sensor corrodes up internally and quit working. Won't cause a lean code though. If they are burnt up it's usually the converter is plugged on that bank and back pressure is causing it. Hubert if you solved the problem by treating the connections....awesome. I can't really put it together yet but time will tell, it always does.

steve, all the vacuum lines look good but I will double check them.
fixer, I can't put it together either but the codes on this thing will drive a sane person crazy, for me it's just a short walk. Replaced the fuel pump about a year ago, was causing a no start condition but let it sit for a while and it would start right up. Forgot the code but it was seemingly unrelated, clear the code and it would start. Took a good Ford mechanic a week to find the problem.

One often ignored component is the Vapor Recovery tank under the passenger inside the frame(sometimes). It has a life span where once the carbon is all degraded and used up becomes a vacuum 'Leak'. Will tend to smell like gas leak when just refilled as the tank vapors are just released.
