First post, so a little introduction. This forum has been extremely helpful when searching problems on an older Allis Chalmers. I have an ac 200 which was my grandfather's, fathers and now I'm trying to keep running. It is used a few hours per year, primarily raking hay.
It started running lean, and finally died after a couple hours operation last year. I replaced the primer pump and thought I fixed the problem. This year it ran for a couple hours, starting acting as if starved for fuel and now will only run for a few seconds after priming. It seems to be getting good fuel to the pump and the hand primer builds pressure so I don't think a restriction or bad primer is the problem. The return line to the tank is open. A couple questions. When it was running a bit I took the return line off at the pump, fuel was coming out the pump at this connection. Is this normal? Should I be able to move fuel through the pump to the injectors with the primer pump? Also, if I prime with the inspection cover off the fuel will come out here. Is this normal? Does any of this point to a restriction inside the pump which a rebuild will fix? Any input will be greatly appreciated. I would like to make sure the fuel pump is the problem before rebuilding. |

Sounds like the injector pump needs a rebuild. The old Roosa Master pumps do not like new diesel very much. It breaks down the flex ring inside the pump. Your hand primer is working fine. It does not send fuel to each cylinder, that's the job of the injector pump. The primer pushes fuel to the injector pump only. While you have the pump getting rebuilt, I would recommend flushing out the fuel tank, cleaning out the 2 sediment bowls (and their screens), as well as the 2 fuel filters on the side of the engine. Refill with FRESH fuel when everything is back together.

The 200 doesn't use the pesky sediment bowls like a 190, but the shut off valve and tee at the bottom right side rear of the tank is a notorious place for crap to build up and restrict the flow of fuel. Check it.

It's normal for fuel to come out the cover over the timing marks.
The problem I had on my 200 is they reduce the size of the fittings at the tank ond they plug up easily. This will cause the issues you described.

Thanks for the replies. It seemed I was getting good flow to the pump, or at least I was when using the primer pump. I pulled the pump off and will take it to a shop tomorrow. Hopefully I'm not doing more harm than good. I'll post.results.

Just a follow up, the fuel pump has been rebuilt and the tractor runs. The shop said the governor needed to be replaced.
