On another forum someone said that Allis Chalmers tractors were "known to have governor problems." This is the first I had heard - anything to it?
I have had my C for about 7 years w/o that problem and just wondered what you guys thought. Thanks. |

I have had four, only one had the weights of the governor damaged.
We ran the WD series for years on the farm and did not have any governor issues. They can get worn linkages and out of adjustment. Regards, Chris

Allis had one of the best governors for quick response as far as I'm concerned and yes, some did have problems, AFTER 50 or more years of use!

Unfounded criticism likely due to favoring a different brand/color tractor. Farmall guys seem to give it worse than others. No, I'm not against Farmalls or any other. I've owned Farmall, John Deere, Massey-Harris, Oliver, and Allis-Chalmers. I have no bias. Well, maybe - I don't like Belarus lol! I hear they, um, no wait, lemme think a minute...

His was the only negative post out of 17 posts so I think you guys are right - sour grapes. The posts were from 2014.
Thanks. |

As part of any tune-up for Spring work, I usually replaced governor weights/pins/clips, especially when I was pretty sure that had not been done in some time. Partly for good performance and partly to insure that there weren't any unwanted and unneeded failures of the governor. I always figured it was cheap insurance.

I know the D-17 had governor problems. when I worked in the salvage yard we couldn't keep them on the shelf. When I rebuilt an engine for a friend I had a spacer made up and put a WD governor gear assembly in it

Which series? We ran a S2 for 23 years that I recall (possibly more as dad owned it from the time I was a year and a half old) and NEVER had any governor issues. The mag on the WD was a different story LOL!!

Well Bossman, it kind of lends credence to my theory of a "good" tune up includes governor weights and pins...…….

Yeah, the governor on my CA had to have some work done on it a few years ago. It only lasted 63 years...
