Hey everybody. . . . AGAIN! :)
I feel like I 'bug' this forum way too much and on the simplest of things. I am needing a new light switch for my `47 WD. The old one was rusted and busted up, so I ripped it out. Steiner Tractor (who I am sure you guys know) has 2. But not sure what the difference is or which one to use? Also - Can I not just get a normal toggle switch from Auto Zone to use? I mean, all this is for, to my knowledge, is turning the headlights on and off. Eventually, I want to mount tail lights. The 3 position switch controls the charging output in addition to lights on/lights off. If you have an original 6 volt charging system with a cutout rather than a voltage regulator, this will be important.
The three positions are: 1) In, low charge, lights off; 2) One notch out, high charge, lights on; and 3) Two notches out, high charge, lights off. Generally speaking, if you are using the tractor regularly and not using any electric accessory, low charge is all you need when the lights are off. If you have a battery that is not completely charged when you start it, you can run it on high charge for a while, but doing that too long will overcharge and at a minimum, boil off the water in the electrolyte. The two position switch is just on-off. If you have a voltage regulator, that will work fine.

Just a word of encouragement, You don't need to feel like you're bugging us at all as we all were beginners at one point and needed to ask a bunch of questions to gain understanding. That's what makes this forum work so well, we know that by the questions that you ask, you're wanting clarification and information in order to make the right choice and decision for you. And, we're all glad to answer you if we can in order to get you pointed in the right direction. We do not mind at all how many questions you ask, as one day, you'll have enough knowledge and experience to answer others who are starting out on their projects, and asking a bunch of questions is the way to get there. We're glad to see you and have you on board.

Jim is right. I still have Allis questions everyday!:) BTW I have upgraded most of my tractors to be 12 volt, non standard electrical systems. Regards, Chris
