Hello folks,
I have a d17 and its diesel, not sure of year. Ran fine, has 12 volt system, alternator hasnt worked for a while. now wont start, just a hard click when I turn the key to on, but nothing when I attempt to start it. it has 2 solenoids mounted just front of the battery shelf. Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this thing would be greatly appreciated.

I solenoid is for the intake air heating element and the other would be for the starter. Dusty has a good test, also check the volts at the battery while attempting to start. Also, see if the engine will roll over by hand just for the H3!! of it........

You said the alternator has not worked in a while. Fix it, charge your battery and the tractor will start. A drained battery will make the solenoid click but not turn the starter.

Check all the cable/wire joints, it could just be a bad, loose and/or corroded joint/connection.

8.6 should be enough to turn the starter. What is the battery voltage while you are attempting to crank the engine? |

The Battery may have 13.6 standing volts, but to make sure its supplying enough power in the crank mode, you need to do a draw test on the Battery to make sure its good. Do a draw test. If the Battery is good, check & clean your connections. Wouldn't be a bad idea if you took the Starter motor to the local rebuilder and let him run some tests on the unit to make sure that's okay also... HTH Steve@B&B
