 Topic: Hit A Small Jackpot

So one of our neighbors passed away several years ago...a grape farmer that had some AC stuff. He was the brother to the tobacco farmer next to our farm...family friends close to 75-80 years now. Well his grandson calls my dad a couple of days ago and says he took his grandfathers D10 home with him after he passed and wanted to know if we’d be interested in buying it.Well we're going to look at it this weekend but my father also tells the grandson he’s more interested in buying the AC cultivators and shanks if they could be found...the old home place had grown up in a bad way.So the grandson says sure,’if you can find them ,just gimme a little change for them’. So we take off and go digging a behold we find the cultivators,an AC rotary hoe(we put the SC hitch in the truck) and then my dad trips over his planters that was buried beneath saplings and vines,never would’ve seen it if he hadn’t tripped over the eyelet of the hitch.Pulled the hopper tops and could not believe,well no snakes for one but there was absolutely zero rust in the bottoms.After we got them out I took my garden CA back and hooked them right up. The old mans grandson asked if $300 was ok for it all .....but I think dad gave him $400 for everything.So we’ll see how it goes on the D10 this weekend.

Out of curiosity, how did you get all the rust and old paint off the planter prior to priming and painting?
I would have been compelled to dismantle the whole thing and clean them up piece by piece......part by part......which is such a big job I'd never do it.

We did...tore it completely down and had a good friend that owns a powder coat & blasting company came out and glass blasted it then immediately I started primering everything and dad started assembling it.After he got the frame together then I fired up the gun and started spraying it.

That would be the best way, but not many seem willing to go that route. A lot of paint jobs I see looks like they hit it with a rattle can from 2 feet away.......no prep.
I wasn't around when that planter left the showroom floor, but I doubt it looked that good when it did.
Good news is when the time comes I want something done right, I now know who to send it to!

Well I appreciate for sure,thanks!And yeah that’s just a halfs$$ed way to do it and doesn’t accomplish anything unless one is just trying to make a quick buck and run something in and out and that’s worse all around for the equipment and whoever is ends up with it.

Well,I ended up buying the D10.Fortunately the grandson which was a childhood friend of mine was pretty excited that it was staying close to home and family so the deal was super fair for both.Just gonna clean it,change all the oil,new shoes,muffler and one new rear rim. All the original decals are all still good as are the knobs so I just don’t have the heart to strip it down...it’s s good solid tractor as is.

Don't you dare strip it down. They are only original once. Pressure wash and a buff and that thing will be gorgeous.

I agree too,, clean it up good, and buff it out,, it will shine like a new penny,, only thing you might paint is the rear rims and front wheels,, then it'll be ready for the show...
