Recall this being a post a year or so ago. Nephews have a pretty healthy lawn, leaf and snow removal business. One of their customers (larger commercial warehouse operation) wanting them to mow a 15-20 acre area once a month behind their warehouse. Wants to keep it looking nice. What would be an approximate per hour rate to come in and mow? Would be using my tractor and set up. OF course the Nephews are thinking they can employ good ole Uncle Scott for a couple of days a month cause they're to busy with their crews prettying up all the neighborhood lawns.
I'm thinking it'll take about an hour or so per acre and I'll have some hauling time involved. |

Hmm, 1 hr/ac, say 20 acres....$20/hr is $400. sure seems like a lot just to have a field mowed...add $100 for fuel and transport. dang now it's $500 to have the grass cut !! It'd be nice to have some kind of 'hay' grown and bailed for horses to maybe MAKE money off the land... I cut 1/2 acre ONCE then turned it into a veggie garden( which the wife took over....hehehe) it MAKES $2,000 every year and NO grass to cut... maybe an option ??

Depending on travel time about $35 to $45 trip charge, and $45 per hour/acre minimum to you and add on what the nephews want for their "cut." If the ground is rough, hilly or has ditches the price would be more. I bush hog about 30 acres +/- where a Christian ministry organization if trying to establish a youth camp and if I were not doing it for the Lord I would not touch it for less than $1500 per cutting. Some of the roughest ground I have ever cut.

Cutting it once a month Jay's price may be more in line. I only cut this property once or twice a year. Consider the wear and tear on your equipment, ruining one rear tire would cost you $$$.

Ground isn't too terrible but I am kind of thinking in the range of $1,500 per cut. Given the fuel, transportation and about 20 hours per run that's only $75 per hour for my time and my equipment. And, since it is for a large commercial business that just wants the ground to "look nice", I don't think their overly concerned about the finances. |

if your moving 2 MPH, that's 10,500 feet ... if your cutting 6 ft wide, that's 63,000 sq ft in an hour... that's 1.5 acres .......... don't you move faster than 2 MPH ?

Around here, with a 4' bush hog on a 20 HP kubota, going as fast as possible, say 6 MPH, that would cost about $1500. Don't forget that if some other landscaping company were charging for it, going rate is $65-75 pre hour. In your area, IDK, but look at what a comparable tractor with mounted bush hog rents for, per hour...

OK, humour me guys( back is skrude...). How many, more or less, ballpark, average.. small square bales of hay can you get from a 20acre parcel of land ? It seems to me even if they let the local farmer use it for a buck an acre, that's cheaper than paying to cut grass all summer long.Say 5 cuttings, $1000 per..yeesh 5K as an expense to mow the lawn. Guess I'm getting old, but is does seem to be a waste of land.

should get at least 600 bales per 1st, 2nd cutting, maybe 400 on 3rd, and 200 on 4th! that's alfalfa with little care, and maybe a little N in spring. i'm basing this on hill ground

Do you know how it was mowed before and price they might have paid?
My bigger concern is on what they would call "looking nice". With my D15 and Woods mower the pasture I mow looks "okay" but in the corners there will be some tuffs of grass from when I turn. Would take a whole lot longer if I did a "perfect" job. The empty industrial lot (+/- 7 acres) across the street from where I work is mowed by a guy on a Toro Zero Turn because the owner wants it to "look nice" Surprisingly the Toro clips along at a pretty good pace. It is a rectangular lot and only a few trees along the frontage road, otherwise, wide open. That may be another thing for you to consider, is it a vacant field or is there trees, bushes, landscaping you need to worry about mowing around? I would have your nephew quote the price using his normal formula ($$$$) but also mention he has access to a Bush Hog that it will do a presentable job but it won't be perfect like their front yard for discounted price.

Start with what a rental place wants for a tractor and mower. Been some time, but last I checked you had to pay for the fuel on top of rent. You can probably do it for less, since they need figure in the guy that brakes anvils with a rubber hammer. But your looking for a little money in your pocket
![]() I get your thinking jay,but that cheap comes with complications to the big corp doing anything it wishes. A local brewery has a similar deal, they let someone farm it for free. But can come in and destroy the crop if they wish to build something on part of it.Not many want it with that threat hang over them.

My brother was mowing CRP they charged $15 /acre and he mowers about 12 acres / her with a 24' bat wing. So that was $180 an hr as an employee he got $15 an hour the rest when to up keep and profit. The smallest plot we mowed was 120 acres the largest was 2200 acres. They drove 2 tractor 80 miles and towed the service truck behind one to do the 2200 acre.

If it's easy cutting, $20/acre. I could probably do 20 acres in 3hrs with my 15ft batwing. That's $400, not bad for 3 hours. If it's rough, full of heavy brush, and other stuff, stay out of it. You never know what is in a grown up field. I ran over a woven wire fence once. The weeds and vines had it rode all the way to the ground. The land owner didn't even know it was there.
And if it is to far away to drive the tractor there, forget about it. |

I had a guy call me once and wondered what I would charge to mow 2 acres for this lady he was working for. He said her lawn crew wanted $500 to do it! I told him 80, did it awhile later and she was so happy she gave me a $100 bill....been mowing it 3 times a year ever since. Neighbor is out there sometimes with his Zero turn zipping along with the blades in the dust and leaving weed stems sticking up everywhere. His turns into a brown ragged dustbowl, hers is a nice looking field. Both are $1M+ places...I think it makes her feel good.

Was thinking that exactly. As for the mill getting $10.50 per bale....if you think a farmer is going to make $18900 or $945 per acre on 20 acres off a hay crop, I have some prime real estate on the Florida coast you might be interested in. Hurricane proof too!😎 Edited by Tbone95 - 18 Mar 2019 at 6:19pm |

I’ve got a 1994 60hp Diesel Massey Ferguson i was planning to use with a 6’ brush hog. The ground isn’t to bad but does have some trees and brush scattered around it so won’t be a bunch of straight runs. There’s also a small creek/ drainage running through the middle so that will slow me down. It’s also a suburban location so will need to trailer in my tractor.....which also makes it a challenge to consider for hay.

I've always heard plan on 30 - 40 bales per acre for fescue. Add fertilizer and that count should go up. Also depends on the type of grass as to whether or not it's worth baling |

A lot of it depends on you. Do you want to do it? I love to bush hog myself, but if the place is to rough it takes all the fun out of it. Not many fields around here are perfect. I don't mind going around a few trees. If the limbs are low I would make the owner understand that I might not get that close to them. It's not worth tearing your head off or breaking the muffler off your tractor. It also depends on what else you got going on. If you have other paying jobs, then you need to charge more, because you're losing money else where. If you're sitting at the house making zero, then you can take less, because something is better than nothing.
Charge enough to cover your expenses plus whatever makes you and the owner comfortable. And remember, your not gong to get rich bush hogging no matter what you charge. |

Look up your land university custom farming rates. The U of I in IL says $126.30 an hour or $21.70 per acre with a 15ft mower. That is the most recent as of 2015.

I uses a 7' flail mower behind my IH 460 and figured $60 a hour for it and travel was minimum of $45 or hour at same $60 if beyond 1 hour drive time round trip .
