 Topic: 190 xt gas starting

The allis is up to its old tricks when starting, seems like it is flooding at start, babbles around for awhile on 3 or 4 cylinders, spitting black stuff all over the hood, then all of a sudden it hits on all 6 and runs like a champ. Have pertronix installed, want to do plugs, cap and rotor. Would it help to go to a hotter plug? it does not see any field work, just snowblowing and work around the place. I was told the fancy y plugs make this problem go away, anybody else have history with that fix or other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

The thing that helped mine the most was doing an overhaul on the carburetor . Soaking and putting a kit in it. But it is still finicky at times and will flood when starting if I don't watch my P's and Q's.

Shut the fuel off when it is not running. Turn on fuel then try to start. See if that helps.

On my gas 4020 the choke cable anchor near the carburetor is crucial to good starting and running. When the choke cable sleeve gets loose the panel knob doesn't get the choke full for starting and then doesn't open the choke all the way for running.
When I bought it it had resistor wires to the plugs and smoked like an IH diesel. Besides the choke cable, I found a mud dauber's nest in the intake pipe above the air cleaner and that the Donaldson pre cleaner had been overly tightened acting as another air flow restriction. Fixing all those things significantly improved the fuel consumption for which the gas 4020 is famous for its hunger. Dirty air filter elements also increased the fuel consumption.

X 2 what Stan noted. Shut off gas supply prior to shut down and run it out of gas. On start up 1/4 - 1/2 turn on sediment bowl w/no choke on a healthy engine. If compression is low may need slight to full choke to get vapor into combustion chamber.
How is the starter cranking?

I have a XT gas with the Zenith carb and it starts ok and runs ok. It is cold natured when first started

On our D17 when we first got it it did same thing. I shut fuel off and tried starting it. Started right up and then I turned fuel back on. I rebuilt the carb as I figured that the float was sticking so I replaced that too and the problem went away. Our 850 did it to and found out the new distributor cap and rotor was bad and not fully hitting all the time. Replaced and no more problems.

Zenith carb, starter sounds fine, funny thing I had to put a new battery in it this year and thought to myself dang, that thing isn't that old, it was a dura start from Runnings, well, when I took it out, it was installed in 2006, 13 years ago, time flies. I put another dura start in it with 800 cca. I shut the gas off before I left the machine shed last and will try to start it without turning it on. Come to think of it, when I filled the fuel tank up, the carb was leaking. So I can take it off again and check needle and seat. I will put it in the heated shop and check a few things over, it does this most of the time though, full tank or not.

There are TWO fuel shut offs on each side of the fuel tank.

I found out I had the pertronix supplied from the positive side of coil, they call for power from 12v side of coil ballast resistor, got that done, did not realize the old girl hasd a reisitor. Then installed 6 new E3 #46 plugs as recommended by local allis guru. first start was good, will see when it gets cold. He claims this has been a good remedy for many tractors he has worked on. Need to pull carb yet and address sticking float/needle and seat.

Does anyone know where to get a electrical diagram for the engine, I am trying to understand the ballast resistor wiring and my manual only shows the electrical for the lights etc.? Looks like the bottom wire of the resistor the way it lies goes to or comes from the starter and to the positive side of the coil. which makes no sense to me. With the switch on I had 12v there, to me this would be the outbound side? Has anyone bypassed the resistor and just spliced the wires together, what would happen? Thanks
