installing a new RO system, current one never worked right.
my question is, is it best to tap into the water supply before the water softner, or after the softner? current one is tap in before softner |

Tapping in before but using a filter system to remove the big chunks .
I ran a RO system with 10 - 15' modules, 700 PSI - output went into storage tanks - then pumped to DI system resins , then to process . Used both sand filters and a bag filter in input side - then RO system - then then the DI . Problem I see with RO is about 1/6 th to 1/4 of input is discharged as premate (waste) Once a week I changed the bag filters - then backwashed the modules with a soap for about 4 hours - then rinsed them for about 1 hour - then used a conductivity check before returning to service . DI water is deionised - soft water with extra sodium atoms , then run through another set of resins to strip the sodium from water. kind of hungry water that will attract any impurities or dissolved materials which it contacts . RO water like DI water is stripped of minerals and it affects the taste to a point many do not like the taste - like it's flat blah tasting
If you run it through unit after softening the membranes will have less calcium but twice the sodium left on the modules . Guess the reason you need the RO comes into the equation - what are you removing from water in the first place ? If iron then a iron filtering system should be used before RO . here in west texas (midland), the city water is god awful to drink.
choices are to buy bottled water, or install an RO. tap water is only used for the laundry, bathing, and the lawn. if you do drink it, the next day you are parked on the toilet. |

Coke, the purpose of an RO is to remove all the CRAP and make the water pure.. Why would you tap in before the water softener ? I don't know, but seem like the softener might help to remove crap also ? Or maybe your working the softener LESS if you let the RO do all the work ?

the RO leads to just one tap at the kitchen sink.
the water supply to the softner does not go thru the RO first |

RO is ultra filtered water - the membrane filters pass only water through them and remove any organics and other such dissolved impurities in the water . Why process the water through softener - adding sodium - then flush this down the drain and or filter it out and decrease life of RO filter membranes . RO water also has a flat taste and when used for drinking water it is aerated before being used as drinking water . The units I worked with processes around 10,000 gallons per 24 hours - then reprocessed those 10,000 gallons through Deionising units to be used in plating and rinse of precision electronics parts and boron coated parts for jet engine weldments fuel cell plates and other industrial parts |
