Value of a CA

When I see a tractor that the seat has been cobbled up like that, I get worried about that else was cobbled up! It's pretty hard to tell unless you can hear it run and drive it.

My opinion is about $500.

It's definitely worth $500 for parts.

I guess my point is that if the original poster is looking for a tractor to run, I, personally, would look for one that I could hear run and drive. It's easy to get into very expensive repairs on a tractor like that.

A couple years ago, I bought a D-17 that wouldn't turn over. The guy told me that he had run it a couple months before (which I now know was BS). I bought it quite cheap. I soaked the engine with acetone/ATF for a couple months and kept trying to turn it. Finally, I pulled the base off and unhooked the rods. The sleeve on the stuck cylinder was all pitted and it was all my 20 ton press wanted to get the piston out.

If you buy it and it needs an engine job, a complete rebuild can easily be more than the tractor is worth. CA's are pretty common and not that expensive. If it was a model that is quite rare (A, U, IB, WF, etc.) it would be a different story.

I can say, with a lot of personal experience, it's very easy to put a lot of money in a tractor that will only be worth $1000 to $1500 when it's all done.

My advise would be to have the guy get it running and drive it, if he wants to sell it. If he won't or can't, I would keep moving until I found a good runner.

I have spent way too much money on tractors that I have brought home. A couple were family tractors. So I guess I justified that expense. On most of this stuff they could almost give it to you and you would still spend a bunch of money and or time getting them back to good working order. Taking them to a refurb, clean and paint tractor (RCP) as mentioned you will have more into them than they are worth. But there are much worse things to do than play with these old tractors. And the satisfaction when your done! Priceless!:)

Rear tires and rims can set you back $2000. I would say the value is Ok and you should bring it home if the engine is loose.

i got a add on hear' nice running ca; priced right' can get on an go' with good rubber. never heard from anyone.$1500 obo' one sold with stuck motor sat for years someone gave 1100 for it at a sale' an all the tires junk' an one back rim junk' why is that ? can't see it..

My thoughts on that one is if you are running a scrap yard that one may be a candidate for whole sale scrap price.

overall tractor market for someone just looking for a tractor to use $1500 will put a buyer

in the area that can get something like a D14 or D17 bought.Plus less people all the time out there that want a tractor they view as 'off brand' especially with a different hitch like a

snap coupler or a Farmall Fast Hitch. I saw (and bought a few) really cheap tractors at auctions last year and some crazy high prices too.But if a person holds their cash and

waits sooner or later a real bargain will come up these days.

I just parted out a wide front CA that was complete with snap coupler. It was stuck though. We paid 500 for it nothing was really messed up or worn out other than the engine or seat. Personally, if that guy wants 1000, I'd at least want to hear it run and drive it. the sheet metal is easy to put on if he has all of it and its good and it runs and drives I'd totally pay 1000. the way it is, I'd also go with 500. Just too many unknowns without driving it.

I noticed that the hand clutch doesn't look like it is there.

The CA is a neat little tractor, ours has a woods L306 belly mower on it and it does a great job for a 1952 tractor. Believe dad paid $1,500 at auction for it 15 years ago. Had a 2 bottom plow, sickle mower, front and rear cultivators to go with it. It was well taken care of and runs very well. With that being said, I see several CA’s for sale locally between $900-$1,500. Good looking tractors and they say they run well. The one for $1,500 has a recent paint job, decals,new clutches, and brakes. So to me, $400-$500 would be more in line. JMO
